my polish bantam { poss cockeral } was fine this morning and now he doesnt seem right :( hes resemablely perky but all he wants to do is sleep all of a sudden , earlier today i let my next door neighbours little 4 yr old neice collect all the eggs and some of the big girls got in within the bantams in the end i said hell to it and left all doors to each part of the run open so all birds ended up mixed for about 3 hrs when i got home and put them all back were they were ment to be he came across as not being right i picked him up and he fell alseep in my arms like a baby would do then i put him on one of his perches and his eyes were shut but he was making a noise then his head just bascailly hit the floor as if he had a sleeping disorder :? so i have shut him away in the quantine hutch with his sister for company i know that if he crows at some point i will have to get rid of him right away but i dont want to lose him like this he really doesnt seem ill just very very tired could it be that the big girls have chased and attacked him ?? which has worn him out i wont be out to check him now tell 6.15 am so i am going to worry all night .

I've heard of some others having issues like this recently. the suggestion has been to keep them warm, separate if necessary. maybe bulk up the bedding to keep warm in this horrible weather? one friend of mine popped her chook in the greenhouse with a heater and after a day in there it perked up. but i don't know what else to suggest.

well i put more shavings into the hutch for him to snug down onto an tomorw morning i will bring some straw from the horses and put that in as well . i cant bring any of my birds into the garden or house as my dogs would have them for dinner and my parents forbid them entering the house :( or esle i would have him in my room for the night . thanks for the help just seems worrying though as he was really fine this morning .

If you use the straw put it in bunches, tied up with bale string on the outside of the hutch, not in it. straw tends to have mould spores in it and can cause respiratory problems. if the chook's immunity is already compromised it could potentially make her worse. fingers crossed all will be well in the morn. this weather is shite at the moment! :-)06

you could be right bertie about the spores but i am using barley straw for the horses at the mo and its so white and clean even i was shocked its more expensive then wheat straw but the difference is unbelieveable even the horses havent eaten any , i'll just had more shavings and maybe a warm fluffly towel under that ,lol. i am praying for the morning to get here but your right this weather is as freaky as hek at the mo poor girls are going up and down like yo-yos with thier moulting
