Hi Shalla,

Unless you have a large man-made or natural pond with a filter / pump or stream passing through, then people tend to use tubs of water instead that can be tipped out. They can be moved around as it will soon turn to mud around it. During the winter I put these tubs in a large gravel run so the mud isn't a problem.

I use two sorts - a large 150 litre tub that the geese and ducks can get in via a ramp (5 or 6 bricks on the edge and 3 brinks inside to get out easily) and a flat tray (avaailable from some garden centres) that is ideal for younger ducks as well as the older ducks.

Ducks and geese like to mate on water so it can be beneficial to have some deeper water for them but they will manage with a shallow tray that is deep enough for them to dip their heads into and climb in.

I hope this helps

This are temp arrangements I have at the moment while our pond is being dug - these are childs sandpits available from Argos - Ive use breeze blocks for them to get into and lined with weldmesh inside and a paving slab on the bottom so they can get out. As you can see although the day starts with the sandpits full of water, by the afternoon most of it has been splashed out - yes ducks + water = messy

In the smaller 30ft compunds I have a 10' x 6' fibre glass pond which gets pumped out once a week, gravel with plants and cover for them, in the winter I also add straw under the trees for shelter.

Hi, I used to use a hexapond from garden oasis but found it a nightmare to keep clean so invested in a £30 rubbermaid tub off ebay search 'qps duck pond'! :-)17

Victoria, your set up looks so lovely! What do use on the floor of it? I have bark in mine at the moment but it has caused some problems so need to switch to something else!!

Hi
Thankyou, each compound is gravelled, I use the staffordshire pink as it is rounded gravel and not too small so that the ducks wont eat any! they also have tree trunks, nest boxes some at side of pond, and some in the water (main pond).

Spoilt quackers! Sound like you may have a few pens :) lucky you! Wish I did too, maybe one day, my back garden isn't really up for housing anymore than whats already there!...My neighbours may not be too impressed either!!

Hi, i have a square pond 4ft x 4ft and use decking around the pond, the decking is about 8inches wide so when the ducks first get out, all the water drips off them onto the decking and back in to the pond. Hope this helps :D
