Calcium gluconate

Hi all
The vet gave my hen a shot of calcium gluconate - are there restrictions on eating her eggs and if so how long do they last?

I'm very ignorant about calcium gloconate - what was the problem with your hen which the injection was intended to resolve?
If nobody else comes on to answer your query, maybe you could ring the vet and ask his advice?

Welcome to the forum Bestdogdash. I have the same questions and advice as Marigold. Never heard of Calcium Gluconate.

I've been doing a bit of research and it appears to me to be a drug which helps correct calcium deficiency (hypocalcaemia) which in hens manifests as collapse due to the hen drawing too much calcium from her bones to make eggshells, or becoming eggbound . See

It's also used in cows that have milk fever after calving, where the calcium balance is affected and the cow can go into into fatal shock.
So was your hen egg-bound, or did she show signs of potential collapse, I wonder?
Was the treatment effective for her?

Like Marigold, I'd suspect that the hen had a calcium deficiency - calcium gluconate is also used as an antidote for hydrofluoric acid burns, where the HF tries to strip calcium & magnesium from the bones. Calcium gluconate helps to restore bone density.
I guess that not eating the eggs depends on what the vet has advised.
