My broody 'mini' wyandotte (not bantam) doesn't seem to be eating very much. It must be about 3 weeks now that she's been broody. I shut her out of the house at least twice daily, but I've only seen her eat a couple of pellets and a couple of pieces of corn. Should I be worried and is there anything I can do? I've tried to tempt her to eat with fresh veg, fruit and porridge, but she's not interested. She's so tiny anyway, I'm worried she's starving herself to death!

she will stay broody for a while my maran has been broody for about 4-5 weeks now but as shes now got a chick shes very happy indeed , her eggs never survived and i managed to get day old chicks from a friend and omg my girl was so so happy when she was able to mother them now i get biten on a regular basis but i lost one chick so shes only got 1 now . can you not let her sit on eggs an hatch some ?

Hi Sue, If you are not intending to let her rear any young and hoping she will ride it out it is important you lift her of the nest a couple of times a day to feed and poo. A couple of my Wandotte bantams are broody at the moment. In the past this has gone on for a long time so I now put them in a cage with food and water. This approach normally breaks the cycle in a few days.

I do shut her out of the house 3 times a day, but I've watched her a few times and she just has a few pellets and then goes and sits next to the door waiting to be let back in again! I suppose she must be eating enough as she wouldn't be with us any longer! I offer her corn or veg/fruit but she's not interested. I also put the food inside the house next to her.

Better to try to get her off broody. Food intake does go down when they're brood as the metabolism slows down. They should still end up with at least half a crop full daily or they will lose a lot of weight.

Agree with Chuck, if you arent doing to let her raise chicks debroody her - plenty of posts on here on how to do it :-)17
