Well, 7 weeks down the line and mum is still brooding the 2 remaining chicks. I managed to rehome 2 of the boys (boo hoo, my favourite one too) and so only girl and last boy left.
Mum is still calling to chicks with food and they respond and is also tucking them under her wings at night. She is making no attempt to leave them, so not in a hurry to move her on.
My question is about growers pellets. Mum is moulting, not laying and doesn't look like she's going to. I've started weening the chicks onto growers pellets this week. Is this bad for mum, good in the short term as she's moulting, or is the food causing her to moult?

When ours stop laying because of a moult we put them onto grower/ rearer pellets because our brand has more protein than layers, which is what they need to grow feathers. I think the change in food and her moult is just coincidence BB. Of course the chicks mustn't have layers until at least 18 weeks (and we wait until the first lays) because of the damage the excess Calcium causes.

I agree with Chrus, no problem. If she isn't in lay but is moulting, she doesn't need the extra calcium in layers at present. But a bit of extra protein wouldn't come amiss, if you have any mealworms or sunflower seeds seeds available as a treat.

I spoil them rotton with mix of corn sweet corn mealworms sunflower seed and millet for their evening treat, so glad to know that it's ok to give her growers. After Taks traumatic moult last year, just happy she seems to be doing it at a more steady pace than the complete naked state she was in before.
She has made such a perfect mum I wish I'd given her chicks before, she is such an amazingly beautiful and wonderful chicken :)
