one of my new bantams has decided to go broody on me ,but surely shes a bit confused at this time of year or doesnt it matter with bantams .i went to get her out the plastic house and she pecked my hand hard as if to say 'get the hell out of here ' and she was laying on a egg .

Not necessarily broody Karminski. Sometimes they are not aware they have laid and resent the intrusion whilst they are. Broody is with all the feathers fluffed up and a glazed expression, like their eyes are not focused on anything, plus a shriek when disturbed. I usually get pecked if I put my hand in the nest box while they are laying.

As she was laying an egg..probably the peck was a "leave me alone" peck..keep a eye though, these bantams do have a tendency to turn broody when you least expect it, especially with the unseasonal warmish weather we have had. I have a detirmined broody duck at the moment...definately do not want duckling this time of year!!! :o :D

it was the same yesterday so i moved her complete with nest box into the main wooden house they and she soon got out of it but tonight she was different so i left her there ,her feathers were fluffed up and hse wasnt impressed with me disturbing her thing is this is my first time having a bantam go broody on me but i assume its no different to a normal hen.

Sounds like broody Karminski. Like Foxy says bantams do go broody unpredictably. Two of our three did and started pulling breast feathers out like mad -with no eggs to sit on!!!

think i will keep disturbing her , i dont want her in this plastic coop as even without chickens in it theres tons of condensation on the roof and sides will take her out in the morning and block this house of so she cant get in it .

I think it's this weird weather, my little silkie x has gone broody again in the last few days - I just keep chucking her out of the coop and take any eggs out too - although at the mo she's the only one laying!! - I've never had a bird go broody in december before though!, I keep waiting for the temperature to plummit like it did last year and dump a ton of snow on us - not that I want snow but it's just so weird for this time of year!!!!:D

mine will be getting chucked out tomorw it worries me so much as shes so little as well she needs to eat in this weather not strave herself .

You need to keep them moving anyway Karminski or their legs seize up. Certainly the case with Orpingtons which should be lifted off the nest twice a day, if they don't get up themselves.

thanks for that will deffy move her in the morning wether she likes it or not .

p.s chris quick change of subject you know you say my life is never dull well this morning it was umm not dull i left home at 4,40 am to go to the yard and as i pulled out my drive to leave my road i turned to find a cow walking towards me in the middle of the road without a care in the world { its white head lit up from my headlights freaked me right out   }, yes i swore loads and freaked out then decided to call my friend who owns the cows before the police called him and he didnt answer any of his phones as 1 he was alseep and 2 the mobile was in the van all night anyway i decided to call the police who had already been called and they were on thier way , i live on the main a30 which is one fast road during the night and i said to the operator that if someone had hit the cow at speed its not worth thinking about but thankfully it hadnt gone on the road but stayed on the pavement and headed of down my road which leads to another gate onto the commonland , the police went to my friends house got him up and they got the cow back safely but when daylight arrived and after a head count of all other cattle they still couldnt work out where this cow had got out from in one way its really funny but it could of been far worse .

Amazing -getting up and out by 4.40am as well! Thought I was early at 5.30am. Hope the farmer isn't prosecuted as they are round here automatically. £2000 fine for allowing livestock to stray I was told. Probably someone trespassing and leaving a gate open and perhaps someone else shutting it but too late.

We had a similar incident Karminski. It involved chasing a Suffolk Ram down the A38 on a Sunday afternoon while cars and lorries swerved to avoid us. Then cornering it, getting a rope round it and wrestling it to the ground and holding it there for 2 and a half hours until Animal Rescue arrived. Then four of us lifted him (80KG) into a pickup. Police Inspector sent us a letter of thanks, but we never found out how it got there. Came from Northumberland and we think kids let it out while the driver was having a coffee in the Little Chef on the opposite side and then closed the trailer up again so he didn't notice. Someone rang the Police and reported it as a cow! -mind you it was big and the village is full of townies.

And the other story I am reminded of is my Dad's friend when he was in the RAF. Used to lodge in the local pub and drove his pride and joy, a Vincent motorcyle, at speed down the country lanes from the base every night. Except one night there was a cow across the road. Brakes on old bikes were not very good. He drove straight through it and spent 6 weeks in hospital recovering.

Hope you sort out your broody girl.

my friend wont get prosecuted for it thankfully an luckily no one got hurt except me nearly having a heartattack   , well i did get up early today with a headache from hell had xmas works meal last night and i never drink ever but had quite a few vodkas last night now paying the price but i have managed to get the animals done now its of to make sure my broody is ok as she got kicked out this morning and then get eveything ready for my 2 new girls that ii am picking up at 10am .

just going to try and put pic on they very pretty :D will put them in the photos of chickens section

Look forward to seeing them. Talking of broody, the only Orpington laying at the moment, Ollie, has decided to go broody. She has just started but the oooh oooh noises, the far away stare and the missing feathers give it away. She's sitting on a pot egg I left in there to sort out an egg eater!

well my one got kicked out the house today and omg she was not happy so late afternoon she decided to try an get snug under one of the houses and i had to use a plank of wood to push her out as she was so far back  i put her in the normal house and i think shes now sat firm in the nest box there   with no eggs .
