hi everyone

my hen has gone broody and ive just ordered some eggs to try and hatch and i was just wondering if i have got to leave the eggs 24 hours or can i put them straight under her? and do i still have to candle the eggs?

and also do i have to put her in a coop on her own with her own food and water?

thankyou

Hello, yes, leave them 24 hours to settle before you give them to the broody- and yes, she will need her own coop and food/water. you dont need to candle them but you can- i would only do it once at say 10 days.
regards, David :)

hi david thanks for that

i was also wondering how long hens are broody for? cuz the eggs come tomorrow and i have to leave them for 24 hours so will she just sit on them till they hatch or will she get off them after 21 days?

and also when is the best time to move her to her own coop?

cheers for ur help :)

Hi there, you can settle her in her own coop right now. Pop some pot eggs or golf balls under her to make sure she is going to sit tight.

If you move her now it will be easier on her (and you) when you do finally slip the fertile eggs under as she will already be settled ;)

Once the eggs are under her she will hopefully sit on them until they hatch. If they do not hatch she probably will still sit on them so you would just have to remove them. She will come off the eggs at least once a day to eat, drink etc. Good luck with it. :)

What breed is she? only asking as my brahma banties can cover 8, my pekin 6 & serama & dutch couldnt manage 'normal' size eggs.

hi everyone

ive moved her to her own coop now :)

shes all pancaked and on one of her own eggs the eggs ive ordered should be here tomorrow and im all excited :-D

thanks for all ur help il let u know how she gets on :)

my hen is also broody is it not too soon to hatch chicks out because of the weather??

i dont think so

i think if it was to cold she wouldnt be broody if that makes sense lol

i read somewhere that they dont go broody in the winter cuz its too cold and they start going broody at spring/summer time but i guess my hen will keep them warm :)

hi,

oh okay. yes it must be pretty warm and fluffy under a broody. the temperature here is only in single numbers and we are still getting frosts and my wyandotte is extremely broody! just dont want to have chicks and snow would have to move them inside if that happened..

hi,

just thinking did you remove her own egg when you added the others. if not her own will hatch before the rest and she may abandon the clutch to go off with her chick or leave the chick to stay on the others. ideally they all need to hatch together xx

they should hatch on the 18th i think. same day as mine! we will have to compare notes!

oh and yh i removed her egg it wasnt fertile lol

under her now ive got a white egg which is a leghorn and i have a light creamy brown egg with could be a sussex, RIR, orpington or salmon faverolle egg and the other four were a mix of darker brown eggs so they cud be either a barnevelder, welsummer, wheaten maran or a french cuckoo maran :)

in the decription he said they were all LF but the eggs were quite small they were just abit bigger than my bantams eggs so im not sure if they are or not and he also said they will either be pure or cross bred cuz hes got 20 cockerels running with 100 hens so ive gotta wait to see what wierd chicks hatch lol

cant wait :D
