hi all

i just wanted to know is it true thats if ur hen has been broodie for longed them 21 days u can put day old chicks under her and she will raise them?

my hens been broodie for about 2 months now and i cant break her ive dunked her in cold water and ive seperated her by putting her over the other side of the fence and some how she keeps getting bk over i would block up the nest boxes but my other hens need them to lay in so the only thing i can think of is letting her raise some chicks but i cant have cockerels so i cant get her hatching eggs :(

cheers

she might not take to chicks some do some dont iv not tried only with eggs. eggs you can find easy. go on ebay and distance nearest first then you can pick up, even though getting a little late in the year but ducks eggs do well in the colder weather she wont care whats in the egg she will love (most the time)

Hi I know people who put a 1 day old chicks under a broody and most of the time is succesfull. They do that at night when hen sleeps so she will think is hers.Somtimes they refuse to take chicks and can even attack them.I would sugest to take a day old chick as she was broody for a long time and She can give up sitting on them alltogether.Try 2, 1 day old small chicks if you dacided to give them to her.

The chances are she'll take d/o chicks but unless you can find chicks that can be sexed at hatching, you'll have the same problem in that some will be male.

I think giving her eggs at this stage is the worst solution as she really needs to come of broody for her own sake. Hatching eggs means she will be sitting for another three weeks.

i know another 3 weeks sitting not healthy for her but if she was healthy to start with she would cope, just chuck her off couple times a day for food drink and dust bath
but if you give her chicks and she attacks them you would end up with dead chicks or have to rear them yourself and getting day old chicks is hard

I think at this stage perservering and keep her off the nest may be the best option. We are now entering into autumn and the chances are she will naturally give up. If she has been broody so long she will probably now go into a hard moult. T
This time of year is a tough time to bring up chicks, everything about poultry keeping gets tougher in the winter!

she comes off the nest her self about 2-3 times a day and il go in and take her out another 3-4 times a day so she does get out quite abit and when shes out shes always eatting drinking and bathing :)

shes been broody 3 times sofar this year the first time she hatched chicks the second time she was broody for about a month and gave up and this time shes gone crazy and wont give up she been broody for so long that shes stopped pecking me when i take her out lol
im just gonna have to try seperating her from the nest box its funny cuz she isnt even sitting on eggs shes got an empty next box and she dont even sit in the same one she will go in what ever ones empty lol

cheers for the replys

mine have tried to hatch apples that have fallen from the tree to small pebbles the last one had nothing under her.
i did have one try and make her sisters 6 week old chicks stay under her but no one broody now.
