I am new to poultry breeding and am about to start with my first breeding pairs.
I recently aquired two pairs of dutch bantams, one black pair and one silver partridge pair. I suspect they are brother and sisters within the individual pairs. The two pairs came from different sources and I was going to swop the cocks around therefore doing a cross between black and silver partridge.
Does anyone know what colours I might get?

probably black but try this out

chez has partridge dutch if you put a partridge with your silver partridge, you get both colours back i think, it worked with my pekins anyway

Thanks.

The colour calculator is great, although I would be lying if I understood it all. I jsut selected the M&F colours and it said all black chicks. Suits me until I can get another Silver Cock bird.

do your dutch fly i cant keep mine down she can fly the lengh of my garden straight up in to the tree and over the fence in to next door she is not too pleased. already lost one as she flew out the garden

Hi,

Your birds sound very determined!

I have 2, the poot is a great flyer, and regularly lands on my shoulder. So I trimmed her wings late last summer, which I very much regret, and won't do again. She looked all wrong, and still flew up and over the enclosure?

Whereas the d''Uccle seems to have outgrown her need to fly. When we first had them, Last Easter as pullets, they flew up on to everything in site. Now they occasionally just fly up to the top of the coop where I am sure they would happily roost for the night if left there.

I think its in their nature, their shape and lightness is conjusive to flying, and with those beautiful wings wouldn't you want to test them out from time to time. :)

Its funny you say that Elmwood. We had a go at trimming some of our girls flight feathers as, when younger, some of our Pekins and Wyandottes were quite flighty. It didn't stop them though and like you I didn't like the look of it so wouldn't do so again. They seem to outgrow it with age though of course some breeds are more flighty than others. :)

i found meme sitting on the lampshade in the kitchen one night the 2 dogs lookin at her thinking dinner.
