..........actually, it's raining and cold ;)

Just in the process of building a coop and run as we have decided to keep a few hens.

Current favourites are 'Pekins' as we want pets rather than prolific egg layers but we are still searching the vast types that are available and are open to any advice that people can give.

Welcome to the forum Bugsy. Pekins are a pretty good choice as first time birds, they are about as non destructive as chickens can get with regards to the land and are reasonable layers of small tinted eggs which taste beautiful, in fact the nicest tasting eggs of any breed I have had. Only thing to bear in mind is they need dry ground because of their feathered feet so a covered run is absolutely essential.

Thanks for the welcome 'dinosaw'

I'm in the process of building a small coop/run at the moment and it will be covered and on a concrete base covered in 'media' of some sort.

I'll post up a thread on the build.

Hello Bugsy and welcome from me. It is sunny at the moment here but the wind is terrible -typical for this area in Winter. All our runs have windbreak netting around because chickens hate wind -it lifts their feathers and removes their insulation, as well as requiring preening to get them back into place. I bought a cockerel last year from near you perhaps. A place called Partheney to the West of Poitiers. We have also had a recent new member from Vienne- Alan2886 from Luchapt.
