One of my girls has laid an egg with blood smeared over it - She's healthy, bright & otherwise normal. I popped upside down to take a peek at her vent and there seemed to be a 'bulge' of skin coming out of her vent as I picked her up, but if dissapeared back inside really quickly & everything now looks normal (I think).
She only came into lay for the first time in Nov. and does lay some pretty large eggs for her size :-)07 She lays about 3 eggs a week and spends a looooong time in the box when she does. I've seen no other problems with her eggs, nor seen blood before - should I be worried?
Thanks.

my new layers often lay an egg smeared with blood the first few times they lay and this is quiet normal. As your hen has been laying since November I would probably just keep an eye on her.

Thanks. She's spent the afternoon racing round the garden chasing the wild birds out of 'her' garden and 'her' bird feeders, so seems her usual nutty self :)

Not a lot wrong there, then - she evidently has her priorities right!
Mine hang around under the bird feeders, in case the sparrows throw them out some seeds.

Hi Baby Bantam. Sounds like a minor prolapse which can bring a little bleeding with it. She should be fine long term but as Val and Marigold say keep it clean and keep an eye on her.

Annie Black Rock had a prolapse and I had to push it all back in and rush her to the vets. Vet did same thing and said if it comes out just keep pushing it back in. Did once and then fine after, laying as normal, behaving as normal. That was over two years ago and she's still with us.
