A hen belonging to a friend yesterday laid an egg with quite a lot of blood on the outside of the shell. She's not sure which hen laid it. She has two older hens approx 4 yrs old and 6 younger hens under 1 year. Is this something to worry about and what could have caused it? I suggested she checked all their vents in case one of them had been damaged.

Nothing much to worry about here. Blood smeared eggs are not uncommon, especially in Young birds coming into lay, or older hens coming back into lay. More often than not it's just the rupture of a few minor blood vessels due to the physical effort of laying.

Hi Sue,
One of my pekins lays every other day (when laying) and gets quite a lot of blood on some eggs and none on others (can see blood days or weeks apart). Was told by the vet not to worry if she was continuing 'normal' day to day behavior. Nothing to worry about I believe, as long as you keep an eye on her.
