Hi my indian runner hen has not laid for about a week, i have changed her food although i am doing this progressively.....to a much better feed. Anyway she has blood in her faeces, not much, just a whisp comes out off the back of a poo. Does anyone have any ideas what this might be?

many thanks :(

Blood in the faeces is a sign of coccidiosis. Is she ok in herself? eating drinking? cleaning etc?

Has she got a swollen abdomen? As I would suggest egg binding.

Hope shes ok and nothing too bad!

Hi, she did seem ok, but not great. She certainly doesn't look bad if you know what I mean. She seems more lethargic than usual. I kept an eye on her and now there doesn't seem to be any blood traces however her faeces is a very small about of usual greenery in what seems like an awful lot of clear water like fluid. She seems very thin too. I also have a boy duck who is fit as a fiddle.

Runners are very active ducks, and robust healthwise, rarely suffering from illness. So if she appears lethargic and underweight there may well be something wrong.
Has she possibly picked up some sort of digestive infection from the ground or water? If she is a bit wobbly and thin, with watery, greenish droppings then that could indicate a gut infection of some sort, worming would be good this time of year as well.
Runners are naturally light physically, do you have any others to compare her weight too?
How old is she? Is this her first laying season? Swollen belly which feels hard could be eggbound (as has been suggested) or squashy maybe an internal layer. What is her diet like? This time of year runner ducks should be on layers pellets for the calcium as they are prolific layers.
Just some thoughts, however, only a vet would be abe to diagnose, do you have a local poultry friendly vet nearby? Good luck with her and please keep us posted!

Hi, I took her up to my vet who is poultry friendly. He thinks she has worms but also had a probe and thinks she could be egg bound. She has laid continuously since sept, until now and she's just coming up to 1 yr old. She's got wormer but we'll see if she doesn't lay by thurs she'll be going in for X-ray. She's lost quite a bit of weight and has most of the symptoms you mentioned above. But she's not off balance, thank you for your help. X

Oh bless. Well good luck! Lets hope it is just worms! Nothing too serous honey! xx
