Can any one advise me which breed is best for free range, slow growing broiler/chickens that produce good quality large birds for the table.
Would like to see if I can improve on the shop bought quality meat for myself and family. :D

Can't tell you which is the best as it comes down to personal preference. I can tell you where to get a moderately fast growing type from. I've eaten one and it had a good flavour but more fibrous than the usual supermarket birds. It's a cross between a White Rock and Cornish Giant (not Cornish Game). Probably need to expect more fibrous texture due to free ranging. Will make a note of the contact. Thanks.

Slow growing for the table seems a bit wrong but I have Hybrids for egg laying. Included in those are Sussex hybrids and they lay well and are heavier than the others of the same age. And being hybrids are not that expensive to buy. Apparently they taste good aswell.

Just face it- shop bought is not the same quality as "Home Grown".

I've found past 6 months and the legs get tough. Mind you we didn't have Frankie then, who will be our 'peacekeeper' for the next batch and stop them running about fighting with each other which causes the meat to toughen and the weight gain to reduce. I'll worm them next time as well.
