Help we need the input of the knowledgable ones ! It took ages but with patience and perseverance we fitted beak bumpers to our four Amber Stars. Please explain how it takes them far less time to get them off .... All gone into the wood chips never to be found again ... Thus Scraggy is getting pecked once again :(

Hi t4viper. I ran a thread about Bumpa Beak Bits a while back with photos. It's important to have 'external circlip pliars' to fit them easily, otherwise it is a problem. We fitted one to an Orpington and she got it off within two hours. How she managed we don't know but she was so bothered about it she was dragging her beak along the floor trying to tear it out. We didn't fit another one and strangely she stopped the pecking behaviour to the cockerel anyway. Not had any problem with other birds we have fitted them to.

So if you are sure they were fitted correctly, as the ends must go into the nostrils and the bit must be held in the beak, I don't think it's worth trying them again. Alternatively you could give it another try, but you may find the root of the problem is lack of space and boredom. Putting a large perch in any run seems to effectively double the space as it gives an extra dimension and somewhere for the victim to escape to.
