Hi I'm new to chicken keeping & 1 of my hens has been given Baytril by the vet, could someone tell my how long i must keep her separated from my other hens please.

Hi Debsx7 and welcome to the forum :-)99

A little bit of information would be useful as to your birds condition, was Baytril prescribed for a respiratory problem and is this a new bird to your flock?

Hi Foxy,

Yes it was, she's seems to be getting a little better everyday. I've had her for about a year now & have 11 other hens, I'm just worried about the other girls becoming ill.

If they have all been living together then there is little point really in separation if the problem is infectious. Any similar symptoms in the past within your flock?

Some respiratory infections are very infectious but this doesn't necessarily mean all the birds will succumb. Did your vet give a diagnosis or was Baytril prescribed as a broad spectrum antibiotic to catch all infections? (primary and secondary infections, antibiotic therapy is often prescribed as supportive treatment in some cases where the primary cause is mycoplasma for example)

Separation does also depend on your poorly bird however, if her symptoms are quite severe then separation to prevent bullying is a good thing if you feel that putting her with her flockmates would be detrimental to her health.

She had been gasping over the weekend so I took her to the vets on monday & her temperature was 107 so he prescribed Baytril. He also told me to keep the separate her from the rest & not to eat her eggs for about a month after she finishes the medication.

Hi Debsx7. Worth bearing in mind that a Baytril dose wrecks the digestive system. It kills of the flora in the gut that digest the food. They need replacing 48 hours after the last Baytril dose. We use probiotic natural yoghurt. Just a teaspoon will do. Even better is Beryl's tonic, but you need to be in to receive the package as it arrives chilled.

Hope she is better soon. sounds like a respiratory infection and Baytril is the best treatment. Just make sure the ventilation in the coop is OK and the bedding is dry but not dusty.

HI Chrismahon

Thanks for the information, I removed her from the coop at the weekend & have her in a cage in my utility room because I'm not sure if the others will catch it, I did put her out in the garden for a while today & she seems much better. Any ideas about how long before I can return her to the coop?

When the symptoms have gone and her treatment has been completed Debsx7. But you need to make sure that the other hens can see her on a regular basis, like every day. Otherwise she will be treated as an outsider and be attacked. We have had hens remember the re-introduced after a two week absence. We have had a hen attack her sister of two years after an absence of 24 hours. You won't know until you try unfortunately, but the more visible contact you can give without risking infection the better.
