Hi there, I am new to the world of keeping chickens and have been struggling to find a sensible answer on the net to no avail, so I wondered if anyone could help?! I have recently brought a trio of Pekins bantams and they were previously being kept on grass and mud. As they have fluffy feet they were a little muddy and I wondered what the best method was to remove this, also without sounding stupid can you bath chicken if their feathers are a little dirty. They are kept on bark chipping now so will not get muddy any more? Thanks

yes you can bath hens but you have to make sure you dry them off properly before putting them back out. I put my little pekin feet into warm water and gently remove the mud.

Hi,
All my pekins love a bath, whether it be feet and bum or the whole caboodle. As for the hairdryer, they fall asleep. I think they find it very soothing. BUT as soon as they are clean and fluffed up, in the garden they go, and get stuck in. At the moment they are dust-bathing in every dry corner of the garden. But they do look very nice with clean fluffy feet even if it is short-lived.

Use a bowl of warm soapy water, (baby bath/shampoo is ideal). I use the kitchen sink, but they might flap initially and then everywhere gets soaked. I give my girls two shampoos, and three rinses. In between each rinse they sit on the draining board on their towel. I usually get through 3 towels per chicken. You will be amazed how dirty the water is..........

Hope this helps.

I use Johnsons baby shampoo to wash the birds feet, just add a few drops into warm water. On a warm day I leave them to dry naturally on deep shavings or cooler days with the hair dryer which they also love

Can I follow on from this link and ask - how often would you say is "acceptable" to bathe pekins... the reason I ask is my 4 seem to be breaking the pekin mould and absolutely love dirt, the muddier the better... they are constantly manky.... cute as a button but a tad grotty....... I try to wait till the the absolute last before I do anything as i don't want to dry out / upset the oils in their feathers.
And yes my lot love a shampoo and set too...... bit fluttery at first but they soon get the hang of it, enjoy your bathtime frolics, and good luck! x

I have Pekins but I do show them, they are kept outside simply because we haven't got the space to do anything else. They have a full bath about three or four days before the show but other than they are not washed. I also have large fowl and again other than the show birds they don't get washed.

I have clean legged & feathered feet, they only get washed before a show or if really dirty. Though do clean the feathered ones feet if caked.
