Hello I was wondering whether anyone could cast any light on the death of my chicken?

We bought three chickens in October at about 16 weeks, only one is laying (started a few weeks ago). One of the others was clearly unwell yesterday - listless, tail down and yellowy chalky discharge (can't even call them droppings there wasn't enough of them). This morning she was dead in the coop. The others seem fine - so far, but I'm concerned because it happened so fast!

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Hi there Julie,

Firstly, I'm very sorry to hear you lost your barred Plymouth hen. :(

It is possible to send birds for Post Mortem but from what you decribe, it could have been a number of things. Chickens do tend to go downhill very quickly once they are ill (I was once told their respiritory system consists of a number of air sacs that are close to major organs so problems spread very quickly).

I hope none of your others have become ill. :-)05
