i want to start breeding orpingtons, i am going to have 2 seperate flocks, one for Buff orpingtons and one for Gold Laced. but i dont know what to have bantam or standard, what is the hen:rooster ratio.
Would 1:6 be alright for bantams and standard. or would i need more hens for standards because i dont want them getting hurt too much. also what has the loudest crow, i have heard that bantams crow more than standards and they are just as loud. HELP PLEASE???

I have a Buff Orp Cockerel that I will be breeding off next year (I am negotiating for a hen atm) :-)17 I have them as "Produce" though. If I were ever to want a chicken as a "Pet" I would be torn between the Bants and the beautifull giant I have... He glows something wicked in these orange summer evenings with the sun low :-)17 :D Like a zebra crossing "Belisha" beacon... but it will never be an issue for me.... I'll be eating them eventualy.

He is currently with 1 Black Rock and 3 X-Bats, and even though some are in moult they are not too badly treated by him. He used to have a 14:1 ratio and in a few weeks it will be up to around 12 as my chicks mature.
However ... He'll need his spurs seen to soon and I can't make the comparison to a Banty Orp, BUT I can say he is not as loud as some other breeds on our allotements :-)19

I have both bantam and large orpingtons, I tend in my breeding pens have 4 girls with 1 cockerel. My bantam splash orpington has the largest grow, yey the gold laced and black banties hardly make any noise. James my large buff is medium in noise levels.

iv got large and love them my fav breed. iv got bantam growers so dont know what they like yet but the chicks are much flightyer than the lage were at this age might ust be me though
