hi has anyone any female aylesbury's (or the large white aylesbury type)to sell/swap for males as we are down to a 1-5 ratio and shes getting a bit naffed off with all the attention not to mention bedraggled.can anyone ease her plight  :?:

I don't have any Aylesbury's I'm afraid - but if that's 1 duck to 5 drakes, forgive me saying this but it would be best to create a drakes pen for the spring and take 4 of the drakes away. She won't last long with 5 drakes paying her attention.

I will keep an eye open for Aylesbury ducks for sale for you - but it's not a great time of year to find stock unfortunately.

Tim

How close to Warrington is Burton on Trent?
Pages Poultry at Burton on Trent has adult female Aylesbury's for sale.

hi all unfortunately we are near liverpool so burton on trent is a fair old distance.I do intend seperating her but am hoping i can even out the flock asap. :|

what about a courier?I haven't used one before but one that has been recomended to me by a few people charges a flat fee of £35 to anywhere in Britain,it's called UKPigeonCouriers and does have a website.

there is auctions at chelford ( which i think is fairly close to you
http://www.frankmarshall.co.uk/
apparently their are weekly sales at 10am on mondays

hi yes i do chelford but they are young birds and hard to sex in the boxes and two of my males came from there in the hope they were females(no such luck).may try again in the hope there are some older birds up this time.

would it be worth getting in touch with a duck breed club, to see if there is a breeder close to you.Better than taking a risk at an auction with ducklings.

I've checked the printed breeders directory the British Waterfowl Association send out to members and all of the Aylesbury breeders listed are in the South with the exception of David Pownall in Derbyshire and one breeder in Scotland!

David Pownall is about 40 miles from you - the other side of Manchester in Glossop.

He's fairly well known and was featured recently in Fancy Fowl and my guess is he's probably got a waiting list but might be worth a try? PM me if you'd like contact details.

P.S - be careful buying ducklings at auction - they can be sexed very young and it's possible you are buying all drakes...

You can turn the duckling onto its back / side and squeeze the vent with left hand first finger and thumb gently. If you don't see the penis pop out then it's a girl ! ;) Once you have a few ducklings of each sex, you get to know what to look for.

I use the left hand to press gently, then the right to gently apply the last bit of pressure with care.

Ideally you do need to be shown or try very gently because you can bruise / damage the sphincter.

hi tim thanks very much to you and everyone for your help.could you let me have the contact details for glossop as if i cant get anything more local i will have a run up there as it isnt a million miles from here.
