I thought I would let you know that the only really useful answer as to why my Aylesbury duck couldn't walk came from this site thus I have joined!
I am 9 months new to keeping ducks. I have 3 ducks and a drake - I guess they are utility - I raised them from day olds and they are about 9 months old now. One of the girls got up on friday morning - well actually she didn't get up - she could't walk. I thought she may have had the drake sitting on her all night as he is a bit frisky at the moment! she could only drag herself along with the aid of her wings out for balance. When I picked her up there was nothing obvious in her feet or legs and she gave resistance to my hands and to when I held her above the ground. But then just sank down. She liked being on the water and seemed able to swim around fine.
Then I read the poultry keeper forum about it possibly being worms!
So I isolated her at night in her own pen on fresh straw so that she would get rest and I could make sure she drank/ate the Vermex (I use this as a wormer as I feed all my birds organic and try not to use chemicals unless really sick animals). She had 3 days of double wormer as per the instructions and nothing happened - but I went out this morning and she is standing up and walking about!
So for anyone who has the same experience - my Aylesbury was off her legs for a good 4 days. I didn't expect her to get up all of a sudden!
Thank you Poultry Keeper Forum!
