These are a large breed. The cocks weigh in around 10lb + at maturity and the hens around 7lb+.
They take a good 12 months to get to the weight, but are active layers at around 24-26 weeks.

This breed takes the record for egg laying and at one time were a very worthwhile breed kept on poultry farms as a laying flock before the 'invention' of the hybrid layer.

Luckily they have not been bred as hard into feather as their relations the Orpington and still remain on the whole very good layers.
Very easy going breed, calm and friendly and a sitting breed. If any thing they tend to go broody to often, but without out breeding to a non sitter this trait is firmly set in the make-up of the breed.

Chicks are hatched showing white down as well as black, but this reverts to black apon feathering.

Black legs with white souls and toe nails denotes a pure breed.

Very handsome cockerel, and thank-you for the information about the breed, very interesting.

Maybe I'll win the lottery this week-end,then I can buy a small cottage somewhere isolated, with loads of land so I can keep loads of chicken breeds :-)05 .

Trust me on this ;)

The last thing you need is a load of chickens in weather like this.
It takes me all day to attend to all the drinkers in my breeding pens.

Love your cockerel- the more I hear about different breeds of chicken. the more I would like to have, but in a 120 foot garden I guess you have to draw the line somewhere.
