My poults are now just over 4 weeks old, and a few days ago I took them out of their brood area on a warmish day and put them out on some fresh grass for about a half hour. We knew from previous displays that 3 of them were Toms for sure - they'd been doing the whole tail-feather and wing thing - which was pretty hilarious at 10 days!
Supposedly Toms are much noisier than hens - if that's so, then I've 5 toms and 2 hens! The three obvious toms were out there making a huge racket, but two others joined them. Two stood or laid down quietly and looked rather annoyed by all the racket.
Haven't seen any displays from these other two, am hoping that they're just loud females, as I'm trying to add to my breeding stock and except for the lavender tom, I don't need more toms. (Although they will make tasty eating, I'm sure)
Anyone out there with experience with turkeys that can tell me if being mouthy is a reasonably sure sign of a tom? We're fairly new to turkeys, have had chix for over 25 years, but these heritage turkeys are a whole new experience.
