Are my girls odd?

I have 4 hens, the little one has been laying for a while now, her eggs are tiny, bless her. 2 of my larger hens have started laying now but not in the nest box or coop but outside. There is an old thick duvet on top of the coop for draughty and cold nights so that I can cover them up, this morning I watched as they both got on top of the coop at the same time, both picked the edge of the duvet up and climbed underneath and laid their eggs, after they had come out I went out and lifted the duvet and staring me in the face were a little bunch of eggs, probably 3 or 4 days worth (it never occured to me that they might lay them under there). I have no problem with them laying there at all, I think it's sweet that they both laid at the same time but just wondered if it's normal behaviour (I got them in October and they have only just started laying)
 
maybe your nest boxes aren't dark enough for them some chickens like really dark places to laym you can help them with this by hanging sacking over the front of your nest boxes.
and i think most chickens lay first thing in the morning. except mine of course
 
My little one doesn't lay first thing in the morning either, she usually lays somewhere between 4 and 5 in the evening before they take themselves off to bed. It is quite dark in the nest box, I already have some sacking over the front, never mind, will just putting it down to them being quirky individuals lol. Thanks for the reply x

I don't think your girls are odd. they are like people in as much as they are all individuals and have there own likes and dislikes.
last year I got a big cross breed hen with her chicks from a local auction. wen I got her home she had really bad scaley leg so had to live in a rabbit hutch in the back garden away from the others untill she was treated. once I moved her in with the others she settled well apart from the second day she was shouting like mad. when I went to see what was wrong she was standing at the door of the run shouting at me. I let her out and she promptly toddled off across the garden and back into the rabbit hutch. about an hour later she was at the run door ready to go back in with the others. when I looked she had layed an egg in the rabbit hutch. this carried on for months each day she would shout untill let out to go lay her egg in the hutch. I tried taking no notice but she just got louder untill I gave in.the neighbours thought it was very funny watching me go and let her out then off she would go staight to the hutch. thankfully this year she has started laying in the nest boxes. think your hens just like the duvet and good luck convincing them otherwise :)
 
I think you're girls sound sensible,keeping their laying private etc.,they sound lovely,and,they are keeping the eggs warm for you to collect.
