Hi

I am about to (hopefully) hatch some Araucana chicks and have been told they are really difficult to sex. At what age can I sex them from and can you recommend the way I can sex them?

Many thanks

Lisa

Hi Lisa,
I’ve never hatched araucanas, but the one batch of Silkies I did have took ages to develop enough to sex reliably. Maybe you’ll just have to be patient!

Hi Lisa

I hatched some five years ago, my memory isn't that good, but fortunately my photos of them are have dates. The sex was not at all obvious at six weeks but really obvious by eleven weeks which is when my photos were taken. So you should be able to tell reliably from eight weeks onwards. You can sex them by their comb development and by the longer tail feathers. The boys will also be more assertive and confident.

I put the 11 week photos on here at the time, here they are if you want an idea of what to look for.
