Hi All,
it has been a bad week so far an old friend died yesterday after a short illness. Today one my hens a warren seems to have a discharge from her right eye, it looks a little like she is crying as it just looks like water. She walked straight into a clear plastic door window and i am wondering if she could have myco or if it could be something else, she is running around feeding and drinking, but the others know there is something wrong as the others are taking food from her sometimes, as if they they are testing her to say if she is still the top hen. I have given them all ACV in the water and red mite powder in the straw, i have also checked for any mites or lice but can find nothing. I jet wash the whole of the coop inside, and put dusting powder around the edges, I put fresh sawdust down and have wondered if it could be that which has got into gingers eyes.
Your help and advice would be appreciated please.
Thank You
Henry

Hello Henry, it may be worth just using some eye drops to see if this helps before anything else. If she's well apart from this. She may have just got something in her eye that has caused it to run or may be the start of an eye infection. How long has she had the discharge?

We had an Orpington with discharge in one eye, otherwise OK. It was very sore and the vet thought there was something in it, but could find nothing. So we gave her half an asprin and watched over the next week and she was fine. Myco comes with a smell and chestyness. Sneezing which prompts bubbles in the eye is the classic symptom. Possibly a bit of sawdust or mite powder has got in her eye as the powder should be kept well away from the eyes, so I wouldn't advise adding to bedding. Just sprinkle underneath around the gaps and put bedding on top.

Well Ginger seems a lot better today, although she did have some white stuff on her beak around the nostrils today. I got that off with some cotton wool pads, i think that the white stuff might have come from yesterday, i tried to get the water with eurythracine into her but she kept stepping on the bowl and tipping it over, so i have a large unused syringe without a needle and used that to try and get the water into her beak but she was twisting so much it shot up her nose, but she can see again now and find her food so things are looking up.
