hi,

my last broody hen got up and marched off a week before her eggs were due to hatch a few weeks ago. now her sister has gone broody and is on 5 eggs. she is so far staying put so hopefully this time we will get chicks!
hopefully dumping youre offspring is not a family thing and she will do the job better than her sis!
another 3 week count down starting now!

thankyou greenhen!

she is sitting tight at the moment. she was only broody for a day before i put the eggs under her so i wasnt 100% sure if she would stay.

the other hen had been broody for 2 weeks before i let her sit so i think thats why she got bored and got up so hopefully better luck this time!

still none of mine gone broody any hints lol
we have tons of eggs as im not an egg lover i just want to watch a hen hatch her own insted of the incubator
i seem to be the only broody hen in my house

you dont mention whether or not you let them sit in the shed they normally live in or you seperate them, they can be harassed by the other hens and leave their eggs, its always better to have a seperate place where they can get some peace and quiet. another reason i have had hens come off eggs was a mite infestation. First and last time though! You also dont mention the breed, some breeds are far better broodies than others.

hi,

easy way to get a broody hen is buy one! i had only hybrids and generally they wont go broody so i bought a pair of laced wyandottes to keep for broodies. so far they have both been broody one started in january!

i move them once i sit them on eggs to their own house and run although they are still in the outdoor area of the other hens so the others do walk past her run.

they dont have mites but they do have a few lice. i have so many birds its a case of managment rather that eradication as they are free range and always pick them up.

the last hen had been broody for a few wks before i sat her so i think thats why she walked away so this time i gave the hen eggs straight away! this is her sister.

one week down 2 weeks to go and she is sitting well. no pooping in the nest or anything. hopefully she will carry on being good! they are due sunday 20th in the afternoon or possibly the next morning.

chicks are due next sunday. one week left and she is doing fab so far touch wood! will let you know what hatches, hopefully at least one will! they are cream legbars except one which was what she laid after i sat her as she had only just gone broody. its a silver laced wyandotte/ cream legbar. could be interesting if that hatches!
