Three weeks ago, after a week of gradually declining, my beloved Barbie was no more.

She had not been herself for several days. I brought her in one day, whilst I was homeworking. She didn't eat much, she didn't want to go out, not even when I put her on the grass outside, thinking this would magically work. I called the vet and she gave me a time slot the next day.

Next day came and Barbie did not eat or drink at all. I knew I had made the right decision to take her to be euthanised. When 5pm came, after I finished work, I put her in a small box with soft bedding, on my knee in the car. We were only a mile out of the village. As I stroked her, she closed her eyes and never opened them again. I was heartbroken. It was as if she had stayed alive all day until she saw me when I finished work, which in a way made me feel better, as I know she died in my arms peacefully.

As you all know, I absolutely adored Barbie, she was almost 3 years free of her caged existence. A good innings I guess. :-)

Aw, RIP Barbie.
Assuming she was at least 18 months old at rescue, or possibly a bit more, yes, she certainly did have a good innings.

So sorry Tweetypie. But to have an extra 3 years, being loved & cared for and to pass away in your embrace... She had the best ending that she could ever have hoped for. You've been a real blessing to her.

I hope you'll get to see her again in heaven one day. I can't believe that heaven doesn't have hens in it...

We all got to know and love hearing about Barbie over the years, Tweetypie, and we feel for you - the enormous loss of a well-loved animal is all the greater when they were such a character and a survivor against the odds. She was an extraordinarily lucky hen to have found you, and so much loving care.
Yes, definitely hens, Icemaiden - and dogs, cats, and at least one special pony ...
