Apologies for the title!

But indeed I have an egg mystery. Two out of the 4 of my hens were laying over the BH (One black rock and one light Sussex). The other light Sussex looked to be ready at anytime. She was seen on the floor of the house this morning (I know and they have lovely nest boxes to sit in too :) and later when I went to check there was indeed an egg. So what I hear you cry.....

Well I it's a darker brown colour more like the colour of the black rock egg, which would have explained it except my laying black rock then went in and laid an egg too. Surely she can't lay 2 in one day?! :?:

Why was my light sussex egg darker than usual? It's can't be my other black rock as she is really young so I am totally confused! :?

Any sherlocks out there willing to help?

Cx

Hello, is the light sussex pure? if she is not 100% sussex then she could lay any colour eggs- black rocks should also lay cream/tinted eggs not dark brown- but that depends on what breeding your birds have.
regards, David :)

Hello David,

Well they were sold to us as that, but that probably means they're not pure! Still look my faux chickens though :D

I'm still having problems with the scaly leg (poor hen's feathers are in a bit of a mess!) she seems to have little grows sticking out of her legs and red spots up and down her legs. Think the others are showing signs now but I'm treating them already so it won't get as bad as Emmeline (my hens are named after famous woman from history...very sad I know! ).
