Just a quick question...we have 3 broody hens at the moment, my question is, is it better to let the broody hens raise the chicks or get them soon after being born and raise them under a light? The reason I ask is because out of the 25 eggs our broody has hatched, when we attempted to let her raise them they have always died...and we have successfully raised 16 chicks by taking them from her soon after birth and putting them under a light. The chicks we have raised are in with the rest of the flock and doing well. Should we give her another chance at being a mom or should we continue to take the chicks? Also should we give the other 2 moms the benefit o the doubt, despite our experiences so far?
Thanks in advance
Brooke

Do you mean that you take the chicks from the broody??? :-)11 if that's the case Why do you do it?? always better to raise a chick under it's mum, heated lamps are no substitute for a broody .. I don't even use heated lamps now even although almost all my hatching is in incybators.. I now use electric hen - if you rear in an incy you can always give the dryed chick to a broody - but I wouldn't dream of taking a chick away from the broody to rear artificially

I have only raised chicks under broodies and all has been fine. Whilst I can understand some are better mums than others I would always let the broody raise them. There is no better site than seeing the mum with chicks. :D

Always prefer to use a broody to raise the chicks. I have found they are hardier.

If you lost so many chicks under that particular broody then I'd take them away and rear them under a light as you did before. Alternatively, you could move them to one of the other broodies. Give the others a chance, most are very good nothers.
