Every time I think I am getting better at sexing them I get caught out yet again. I have a little golden 'cockerel' that I have to keep as he has become a pet.!!!! Ive had him penned with 2 pullets, all about 6 months now. His sibs of same age all crow, but he has always been a definite boy-- having had another cockerel running about with him in a stable today it has become apparent that I am wrong again - I thought he would be duffed up but the only advances 'he 'got from OscaR were detinctly of a sexual nature! I guess ( and hope) I am wrong AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!! Ros

I tried my hand at silkies last year for the first time hatched 4 out of 6 eggs kept them for ages before deciding I had 3 boys and only one girl but in the end even that was a boy  so I have decided not to have silkies as it was to heartbreaking to part with a very friendly girl when (her) crowing became to loud.
I will stick to my pekins so so so much easier to sex :D

The Silkie breeders that I know will always say "I think" when talking about the sex of Silkies. They are vary hard to sex until they either crow or lay an egg.

A young silkie cockerel will try and mate other cockerels upto around 20 weeks old (unsure why). A good tip for sexing silkies the males knuckles are alot thicker than the females, can sex them at around 10 weeks.

I agrre VP re the feet , what Ill do this year is try not to do mixed batches--I need to be able to compare them with true sibs. Then I can see which ones just look a bit prettier ! Ros

ussually males legs are thicker and longer and their comb is more pronounced, i think, hubby seems to be good at silkies, but you do have to wait
i prefer my pekins, by 6 weeks its definite
