I just had my faith inhuman nature restored - I have decided to keep a smaller number of hens(or rather, Hubby has decided for me) so I sold my coop and got asmaller one. The lady I sold the coop to breeds Pekins and so Iarranged for her to bring two over when she came to collect thismorning. I know you are supposed to go to them, but I thought, I don'thave to have them. I now own two of the most beautiful birds I haveever seen - she's really done me proud. Bella is black with the mostgorgeous 'oil' tinge to her feathers and Amber is a gold birchen andhas the most wonderful feathering on her legs. I'm in love.

Now I have 4, I've got to stop, but I am going to have the time of my life - got 2 eggs today into the bargain. YIPEEE
When the rain stops and I let them out in a few days, I'll post some pics, if I can work out how to do it.

Hi,

I am confused? How many have you now got?

Whats happened to Bertie, Gertie, Lemony and Buffy plus the other two you had recently?

I started keeping chickens the day after you did, and have read all your posts with interest, as us newbies all seem to have our doubts and worries about the girls.

We also have a Gold Birchen Pekin, Nutmeg (the youngest and the bully), and our Mollie, the black one is gorgeous. Apparently the green OIL tinge in the feathers becomes more pronounced when in the sun.

Hope they settle in well, and that you don't have too many dramas, enjoy.

Sharron,
What super pics - my new ones are just like yours.
As for the numbers situation - well it all gets abit confusing really, :?
At the moment, on the ground, in the garden I have 7 hens.

You know I bought 2 to go with the Black rocks and the Pekins, and that one of them flew away the same day? Well, because of that, I had to get another to go with the single hen. So far in the story we have 6.
Then on Monday I recaptured the errant wanderer, that takes us to 7.

Unfortunately, Berite and Gertie had to go. Hubby wasn't too happy with the big ones, and I was sorry to see them go, but they have gone to a better place - NO, not the better place in the sky - my friend's farm where they will only have to share 2 fields with 6 other hens and one cockerel. I'm sure they'll have a nicer time, but I really wanted the eggs. Never mind - move on.

So now, we are down to 5.

Then today, I got my two new beauties. Hubby says I can have 4 pekins and that's the lot - but this time, he doesn't mind them having the run of the garden.

So now we are back up to 7.

My Pekins are Buffy and Lemony (the originals) and newbies Bella (had to be a vampire name for my teenager daughter - I drew the line at Vlad, which is what she wanted!!) and Amber (which is all I could think of to do with her colour, but I think Nutmeg is a much better name, really sweet.)

Right, that leaves me with Susie (Light Sussex bantam - gorgeuos and so soft, but with the sclay leg), Petra, the so-called 'bantam' Barred Plymouth Rock that is miles bigger than the others and is definitely eurning into an emu!) and Summer, the stunning escape artist bantam Welsummer cross.

Another friend who lost her bantams to Mr. Fox over the sumemr is taking Susie and Summer next week when they've cleaned out the coop etc, so that just leaves me with poor Petra, who towers over everybody else. I've got her advertised, but if no-one shows an iterest in the next couple of weeks I will take her to a chicken sanctuary I heard of in Cannock, hopefully they will be able to rehome her.

And I think that just about wraps it up. No more hens fo me, just Lemony, Buffy, Bella and Amber.
Will post pics ASAP.

PS. You know I was expecting a real problem adding in 2 newbies, given the way Buffy had hammered Petra, and the fact that they were all going into a new coop this morning,
I defied all advice and just put them all in together during the day and they've been absolutely fine, but it's like have kids - you're always wating for the trouble to start. Tonight they are all cuddled up in the nest box together.
Perhaps they'll start the chicken wars in the morning?

Congratulations on getting your new pekins!

I'm after another two or three partly to keep my hooligan pekin cockeral entertained, but mostly just because they're really nice little birds.

Glad you're pleased with your new girls, and found loving homes for the ones you're not keeping.Sorry that you can't keep them all,I'd hate having to find new homes for any of my pets.

Lydia, I am sorry to see them go, but this is just one of life's compromises - I'll be visiting them regularly whether they like it or not! ;)

Hi Liz,

I can't imagine having to make a decision to part with any of our girls. Hope it all works out for you, and that hubbie is happier now the feathered feet won't be ruining the garden quite so much.....

P.S. We were going to call our birchen Amber, which is a lovely name, but Nutmeg seemed to suit her, and after this last week, she has proved what a "nut" she is!!

It sounds like you've found them lovely homes,it is always tough to find homes for any pets, but,I think that with any pet, from a goldfish up to an emu, everyone in the family does need to want it,otherwise it will cause problems.Need harmony at home for everyone's benefit.
