to wait for little fluffy chicks! :D

I have enough eggs to fill the incubator, first set of the year. they are currently settling (posted) and the incy warming.
I'm just very impatient :-)07 and cant wait for them to hatch - been waiting ages, it feels like ;)

light sussex by the way, large fowl.
I love it when a plan comes together ... (well, hopefully!) I want to cross them with our silkie or RIR cockerels for Goldtops & warrens.

yep its a long time when you want chicks now! just think about the broody hen who has to sit there for all that time! mine are due on sunday. its my second batch this year as the first didnt hatch out. i have 20kg of chick crumbs for them waiting as i want to breed as many cream legbars to sell at pol as i can this year to help with egg sales!

too right it seems soooo long.....

got at text from our lass this morning whilst at work
"first egg has pipped xxxxx"

tomorrow night should see our first chicks hatched.......Light Sussex too....good luck with yours

No way!
Great exercise, don't tell me you are so much of an Alpha Male than you can't be feeling the love even a teensy weensy bit for your little bundles of fluff that are appearing....
Aw xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx gotta love em!

I've got 12 due on April fools day. My first two attempts were in a bator that had seen better days and kept poor tempatures. I lost both lots and am very frustrated. A new bator and another Three weeks ! :-)11

Yup.. it's hard to wait three weeks ... especialy three times :-)07 :-)09

good luck !

I wondered who would bite :-)10 :-)10 xxxx

2 chicks out now and some more pipping away
This the best thing ever for keeping kids quiet..for once they are not glued to the box
even our lass is hovering over the incubator like an old hen
what a result..I can watch Emmerdale is peace :-)08 :-)08 :-)08 :-)08 xx

some bad news though..........lost a buff orp to a daytime fox..........NOT HAPPY
at least she had a free roaming life.......bit of pest control over the weekend me thinks

@ Rotten Lettuce - I recon I'll be like your kids when mine start hatching
Sorry to hear about the Orp. :-)06 .

I was a fool to use a duff bator the last two times. So a day in April for fools ? It's got my name all over it :-)07

"Reb wanders off with his fingers crossed behind his back mumbling something undiscernible about Ducks like a mantra*

not long left for my munchkins! due on sunday cant wait to see if they hatch although i wont be able to watch it all happen as they are under my broody!

11 light sussex hatched and doing fine :D :D :D :D
apart from 1 that took nearly 24 hrs to break through.....seems to have a dodgy neck :( :(

looks like I'm going to have to cruel to be kind
but will have to wait til the kids go to bed   :o

well done rotten lettuce! how many eggs was that out of that hatched? im still sitting on my hands waiting for mine that are due on sunday. i have had several duff batches in the past and try to expect nothing rather than all of them to hatch these days then im pleasantly suprised if i get good results.
there is really nothing better than going down to check on them and seeing fluffy little heads poking out the sides of the broody hen!

georgina
I put 24 in the incubator; 5 were clear at 10 days and I removed these......at day 16 I candled them again but they didn't all appear to have the same development. As this is my first attempt I was loathed to make a decision to remove any more....bit of a wuss I was
11 hatched out of the 19 and we now have 10 healthy chicks.
I am reasonably pleased... :D

What has been great though it trying to explain the whole process to the kids.
3 girls aged 6, 9 and 11 have shown great interest in the different stages.
They have got a bit upset seeing the distressed, dodgy neck chick.
They are not inner city children, fortunatley, and do know where milk, lamb, beef and pork comes from.
Whilst there were a few tears from the youngest at least they now appreciate the cycle of life a little more.

My wife , who has no interest in my breeding of terriers, and previously was only inertested in our chickens for the eggs they can provide, has been bitten by the bug.

This morning she is sterlising the incubator and wants the welsummer eggs underway.
Wonders will never cease
:-)08 :-)08 :-)08
Will try and gets some photos up soon

Good luck with all your hatching efforts :D :D
