1st chick hatched

hi
today is day 21 and just been out to the hens and i have 1 little yellow half dried chick.. tweeting away LOL
must go and buy some chick food now.
My question to you is...
they are all upstairs in the nest box but will the chicks stay with them, or should i lock them in so the chicks cannot fall down the ramp. if the others hatch should i eventually put a box with some hay onto the ground so the mum can sit outside with the chicks...


please help
 
__if they are off the ground they need to be secured or moved --they will try their hardest to fall out of anywhere! I let mine hatch in a rabbit hutch then ,once they start running about I move them with Mum into small arks in a barn and we can lift them easily in the arks onto an area of lawn kept just for this -so they are not exposed to bugs from adults-if the weather is good.. If they have hatched in a nest box they will fall out as soon as they can and injure themselves. Having said that-- a friends pekin hatched 10 eggs in her horses hay rack --they all survived and none fell out! Ros.
 
They will try to follow mum out. She will most likely call to them as she wants them to learn to scratch and eat & drink. Best to put a box on the lower level for them and make sure the other hens can't get to them or they will get pecked.
 
We hatched our 2 Pekin chicks in a high nest box with ramp, The mum did not take them out of there for over a week so we put the water and food inside. By the time they ventured out they were running up and down the ramp quicker than their mum. :lol: We did attach some quilting material to the ramp so they could grip it better though.
 
i only have the 2 hens(who are sharing the egg sitting) so not a problem with other hens having a go at them. i have put food and water in the bit next to the nest box and shut the door so no one can get out so they should be ok for the first few days. i may lift them down in a day or so and see what happens they can all stay shut in the coop for the time being, no garden wandering yet !!
 
Still no more chicks, thinking perhaps the other 2 eggs are not viable... how long could it take if they are gonna hatch today is day 22. and do they eat they eggs shells after the chick has hatched coz its gone !!
