Snuffles (noisy eater) emerged from hibernation last night and headed to back door for food, I have been putting it out nightly for a week or two ready. Lovely to see him/her back again

Birds like to bathe as well, a shallow basin, like an upturned dustbin lid can be great for them, just put a stone in the middle so they can hop in and out. Are your feeders in the open or near bushes, as birds like to make a quick foray to a feeder, then nip back to safety away from predators...

    Cheery Pics

There was a big influx of Hawfinch into the UK last winter, with some quite big flocks around. I was lucky enough to have a few in the local churchyard for a while. Our go to place for them is Lynford Arboretum in Norfolk, where they pop up in the paddock on winter afternoons. Good...

New person , I’ve introduced myself and now asking a question.

Welcome to the forum @Hellochuck. I would follow Chrismahon's advice, on treatment for the hens he is very experienced. Get yourself a container for their feed which you can take in at night, helps deter predators to. Corn is just a treat or a useful bribe to get them back indoors if they have...

Runny and white poop. Help please

I would just keep an eye on her, as you can have a hen that looks as though it wants to die, and next day she is running around happy as can be. They have "off" days just like us Runny poo could just be something she has eaten. i would just carry on as normal, no need to try any remedies at the...

Multiple chickens with swollen bellies, soft eggs

The fermented feed is likely to be the cause as chrismahon says The only time we give ours anything wet, is a warm mash on very cold days when the water keeps freezing, but any left we remove quickly

    are my hens done laying?

It does sound as though they may have been spooked by something. it isn't always something obvious either We had something similar with a quad bike as well

    Deceased bird guidance

We usually incinerate ours, unless they are extra special. Izzie we buried in a big planter, and put her pal Button in with her when she died. The plants in that tub are magnificent every year. Double bag and put in rubbish, is our councils policy as well

Advice needed for winter freeze( ! Situation specific question ! )

I am not a duck expert either, all our ducks on the lake are wild birds, and will move off the ice at night if it freezes, presumably moving to somewhere unfrozen with more bird, returning in the morning. I would agree with Icemaiden and also speak to DorsetDuckOwner.

    Watch Dates on Poultry Feed!

We are lucky with our local farm shop, they have a big turnover of layers pellets and anything else, so everything is long dated, another farm shop we initially used often had a short date on, or a tear in a bag. We always check the use by date just in case, and I certainly wouldn't buy...

Could you try and train her to use a litter tray? That is the only suggestion which is slightly bonkers that I can think of

    rats

We get Jackdaws, we have a wood behind us where about 600 reside and a Rookery of 400, it gets a bit noisy in spring. They are lovely sociable birds

    rats

Oh yes we know, we trap and shoot them, ditto the squirrels that get into the cattle feed just shot no 73. Only a small woodland at the back of us, they multiply like no-ones busines as well, or someone is shipping them in at night

Introducing my new flock to a Grandpa's treadle feeder

One thing about trapping a rat, you know you have got it and disposed of it. otherwise you are never quite sure if one is still around breeding away

    rats

That must have been a scary moment, OH has been saying she is sure the fat balls are being chewed. This am she opened the storage box where they live, we buy a box of 50. Out jumps a huge rat. So that answers that question. Morning spent emptying the storage box sweeping up all the chewed...
