    Feeding Ducks

Hi All I recently got some ducks. They were in the same run as my hens, but now they are in their own so they can have grass (the hens scratched all theirs up). Can I feed them the same layers pellets I feed my hens? Thanks

    Change in behaviour

My 3 girls are now about 21 weeks old, so 3 days ago I started mixing their growers with layers pellets so that they get used to the change gradually. I also opened up the nesting box so they have access to it. Today the 2 Wyandottes started going in and out of the coop and scratching about in...

Are we likely to get eggs this year?

Hi All Our 3 girls are now approx. 16 weeks old. They are all pure breeds and I know they won't lay until approx 26 weeks old. Now that the days are getting shorter, are they likely to lay this year? What do people think about putting artificial light inside the coop? Thanks

    Feeding eggs shells

Hi All I have today baked some eggs shells to give to our girls. How small should the pieces be, and should we add them to their food, they are on growers pellets.

At last, we've got our girls

We got our girls yesterday, a Silver Laced Wyandotte, a Gold Laced Wyandotte and a Jersey Giant. Unfortunately the supplier only had these 3 pullets left and 2 cockerals, which we didn't want. The little SL Wyandotte got a bit picked on last night and the other two left her out, but today they...

    Wyandottes and Laying

Hi All I've been looking at getting 2 Silver Laced Wyandottes aged approx 14 weeks, and there is a Blue Laced aged 18 months. I thought that 18 months would be a bit old and wouldn't lay much longer. How old do they lay for?

    Hens and Rain

Hi All We're almost ready to get our very first hens. My query is: Should they be kept in the coop when it's raining - which it's doing an awful lot just lately!!

    Another setback - fedup today

Well, we had decided that the spot we wanted the run would be OK (right outside the patio doors from our bedroom so we could keep an eye on them). We had put some more earth on to level it and hubby started concreting the posts in, then it got very windy so had to leave it. It rained a lot last...

    How much ventilation

The new coop I've bought does not have enough ventilation. There is a large 'hole' in the door, which I'm going to cover over as there will be a draught directly on the perch (pointed out by other members on a different thread). My OH has drilled 6 small holes in each apex. Will this be enough?

Are Wyandottes good with other breeds

Hi All After looking round a poultry sale this morning, my OH fancies Silver Laced Wyandottes. Will 2 of these be OK with a hybrid RIR? Also, is it best to get 3 birds that are all approximately the same age, or can they be about 8 weeks different (I saw some 10 weeks Silver Laced and a 20...

    Another Newbe - from Ireland

Hi All I'm very new to this forum. No hens yet, but the coop has just been delivered! If the weather decides to hold out, the run will be built soon. There are so many good topics on here that I'd like to be able to keep going back to. Is there a way of 'bookmarking' them for myself? Many...
