    Help!

This all happened while I was away! Can't find anything now.

    Morehens disease!

My two remaining hens have stopped laying. Izzie (Bluebell) and Skye (Sussex) came to us on 1 October 2019, so are 3+ years old. They have been terrific egg producers in that time, but I don't want to start buying eggs again so I need to buy a new hen. We have an Eglu Classic and 3 hens fit, 4...

    Thin-shelled egg

One of our hens (Izzie, the Bluebell) laid an egg with a shell so thin that it cracked when OH picked it up. This is the first occurrence of this and her previous egg (2 days ago) was normal. We only give them oyster shell occasionally because they normally free range and I think get plenty...

    Feather pecking

Our girls have been banged up for several weeks now which they seemed to take to with no problems. Yesterday OH saw Morag, our cuckoo Marans, who is the boldest of the trio, swipe a feather from Skye's bum and eat it. She's been at it again today and the other two run away from her, as far as...

    Flubenvet layers pellets

I have bought a 5 kg bag of pellets which as you know have a limited life as a wormer. If I have any left over after the worming week would it be OK to mix the remainder with their usual food to save wasting them?

    Bamboo Loo Roll

OH has just bought a box of loo paper manufactured by a company called Who Gives a Cr*p - Australian as you'd probably guessed. https://au.whogivesacrap.org I am quite impressed -it is quite soft and strong, and double the usual loo roll length. The rolls are individually wrapped in pretty...

Making a dust bath for the girls

I realise that normally the hens would make their own, but the family that had this house before us put weed-proof matting all over the front garden. Great! No thistles or other nasty weeds but of course the hens can't scratch. Neither can the cats so they go in the back garden. I have seen...

    Save our badgers

I don't know whether anyone is interested in signing this petition? We don't have badgers in the islands but I think that's irrelevant. They are British wildlife and I think they should be protected. https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/310307

    Tiny egg

Our Sussex, Skye, has been consistently laying large eggs - 70/75 grammes as compared with the other two's 60/65. Collected the eggs today, grey girls normal eggs, Skye's tiny, less than half normal size and weighs 32 grammes. Is this just 'one of those things' or do I need to be concerned...

What can I do with all these eggs?

I thought that three hens would just provide enough eggs for us to get by on as I'd read that they don't all lay every day so we'd get about a dozen a week. Well, there's no stopping these girls! It took them a while to get going but now all three are laying daily so that's 21 eggs a week and...

    Sunday vet visit

Our Bluebell, Izzie, got out yesterday through a part of the fence blown down in the storms. We couldn't catch her but she seemed quite happy grazing in our back garden so we left her to it. Later our distraught neighbour came banging the door - his wee dog had attacked the hen and she looked...

    My hens have started laying!

Well, one one of them has. I think it's Izzie the Bluebell as she looks a lot more mature than the other two, having full comb and wattles. The eggs are a beautiful glossy pinky brown. I didn't notice for a while as she's laying on the floor instead of in the nest box of the Eglu. How can I...

    Hens not developing?

I am a bit worried about my girls as they don't seem to have moved on since I got them. We got them on 1st October when the breeder told me they were 18 weeks. That would make them about 24 weeks now but they don't seem to have developed in that time - no combs or wattles to speak of and not...

    Emergency food!

Just back from holiday and the layers pellets I ordered before we went away haven't arrived. I can't get anything on the island until Monday. What can I give them in the meantime?

    My pullets are moulting

My girls are now about 19/20 weeks and appear to be moulting. Do I need to give them extra/different food? They are all three healthy and active and free-range most of the day but they do like their grub and come running up when they see me.

    Hen-keeping book

Could anyone recommend a bog-standard informative book with all the basics of feeding, etc in it. I have one but it's more of a coffee-table book with lots of lovely pics of hens I haven't got and short on the things I actually want to know.

Tomorrow is H-Day and the Easichick isn't here!

Went to local suppliers last week and they'd run out so ordered from Amazon who promised it for today. The hens arrive tomorrow - what can I use until the bedding gets here? I have an Eglu Classic which is up and ready. Could I use lightweight cat litter?

    Deep Litter System

Forgive me if I've missed it but I've searched the FAQs and found nothing. I'd like to hear about this system from someone who uses it/has used it , please. I've read a lot but the online accounts are full of 'ifs and buts'. I think it might be a method that would work for me. :)
