    Renewables

Does anyone here have renewable energy running? Our gas boiler is on the way out and I really want to kick it out and replace with something more sustainable, probably a mixture of solar, 100% renewable electric and possibly an air heat pump. I have some ideas as to what would work but the...

    Freezing drinker

I've just realised I have a flask that will fit in the drinker. Has frozen over twice today but I must remember to take it out this evening or it might freeze solid in the night and knacker it.

    Hybrid chicks

This is a long shot but there are a dozen chicks at school that will go back to the supplier very soon. At least half a dozen girls among them (the boys are very blond.) Its the way of it - but if there is anyone in the Leamington, Coventry etc area that wants me to keep some for them let me...

    Eggs on the way

The CLBs are getting a definite red bloom on the tips of their combs now. Eggs are on their way, Praying for no catastrophic restart misfires as always - but eggs would be lovely! (from past experience it will be at least a couple of weeks yet.)

    Books

I'm not a big book reader generally. The last blast was Murakami. Anyway, this is not going to interest anyone, I suspect, but I just finished reading a book by Amanda Gefter - 'Trespassing on Einstein's Lawn.' Its blown my socks off!

    Scale ridges on toes?

I took the opportunity to bring in all the CLBs, one by one, after dark this evening and give them a good look over. New pins have made me not want to handle them till now (and they get themselves in a right wriggly panic generally.) Lulu has raised ridges on all of her toes - like linear peaks...

    Bird boxes

A question for you - because I can't make up my mind what would be best. I'm going to make a house sparrow 'terrace' of 3 nest boxes in one. I've seen designs that have 3 boxes but just one hole so that means, in that design there must be partitions between nest 'boxes' that they can fly/hop...

    Boom!

There seems to have been a special offer on mortars this year. I can tell the crew were a bit bothered as they were sort of jumbled up on the perches last time I went to check on them but it has tailed off now.

    Tape worm

Is tape worm in chickens an acute problem do we think? I have got the impression before that it isn't - even some suggestion that it is not a worry at all! But I always wonder where the guidance derives from - like, if it were a commercial flock then the veterinary advice might be that it wont...

    The eggs are diminishing

Down to one layer I think. Well Lulu may still be working the nest box but is looking very pale in the comb. Pom was the first to throw in the towel and start shedding feathers a couple of weeks ago. It will be good to have them all safely off lay for the year but it is such a long eggless...

    Using straw on the floor

This business lately of having to book into the dump to drop off floor covering has resulted in me picking up a fairly small bale of straw locally (pet supplies). I know it would be good to have a big compost heap but Im garden sized challenged in that regard. Trouble with straw, though, is it...

    Bedding cleaner

Ages ago I rescued an old steel lamp shade from the dump thinking it might be useful. Was about to take it back but have been looking for a way of removing poo dust from under the bedding. Deep bed is one way, of course, but I like them to be able to scratch to the bottom to trim their nails...

    Burnt Bridges

I think Ive just cooked my goose on Chicken Keeping UK but snapped when someone posted about whether it was a necessary to mash sardines before feeding them to chickens. I broke (and mentioned something about puffins being under threat from surfboarding chickens.) Its really good that there are...

    Block prints

Anyone recognise the inspiration for this? Hiding for some well deserved peace and quiet in the oak tree last year? Of course, it will be better viewed when inked up and on paper and I'll let you know when I get the paper properly 'sized' (experiments needed) and, oh so hopefully, comes out OK...
