    Hi there, new here!

Well, I'm back, if anyone remembers me. A lot has happened in the last few years and we now live on the Isle of Lewis and hens are now imminent! I have an Eglu Classic and my hens arrive on 1 October. Not the best time of year but I had to order them from Donald MacDonald,' the hen man of...

    Hi there, new here!

Hi Marigold, thanks for the good wishes. You're right - it would have been one more thing to worry about. Glad you approve of my choices - my thoughts entirely about who laid what.

    Hi there, new here!

Still haven't creocoted the coop. The weather has been truly awful all year, the box holding the coop disintegrated and the coop got saturated so it needed to dry out before I do it. Now we're forecast snow - and next month I've got to have an operation so it won't get done this year. Oh...

    Hi there, new here!

Still haven't creocoted the coop  It hasn't stopped raining since the cement-mixer left. Hosepipe ban? Don't make me laugh.

    Hi there, new here!

My new coop arrived yesterday and I planned to creocote it today. Unfortunately we're having our house repointed and the back yard is full of scaffolding and a cement mixer.

    Hi there, new here!

:D That's typical, isn't it? I just saw "Staffordshire" and assumed you'd be near it. Like us -people say "we're going to Newcastle - can we meet you at Scotch Corner?" It's a 3 hour drive for us -we're the other side of N Yorks and can be in Scotland quicker. Marigold, if chick crumb puts...

    Deep Litter System

Forgive me if I've missed it but I've searched the FAQs and found nothing. I'd like to hear about this system from someone who uses it/has used it , please. I've read a lot but the online accounts are full of 'ifs and buts'. I think it might be a method that would work for me. :)

    Hi there, new here!

Here I am again - I note I am now a 'Grower'. Should I move to the 'grown-up' boards now? :D

    Hi there, new here!

 In that case maybe the hens will deter 'visiting' cats - ours will have to get used to it. I've decided now that it will be hybrids to start with but I have still to sort out the house. I received the brochure from Smith's Sectional Buildings today and notice that they are in your neck...

    Hi there, new here!

Thanks - now the big question, how will they get on with the cats? We have two good-natured black and white boys - who will get the bigger shock, the cats or the hens?

    Hi there, new here!

I tried to post a pic but no luck.

    Hi there, new here!

Being in N. Yorks it's only(!) 6 hours from here to Oban. Love Calgary Bay; we're staying in Dervaig this year (Bellachroy Inn) and getting hitched in Tobermory. :D Shame about the Bluebell - we saw two at Hornby Castle open day recently and they were very contented, clucking...

    Hi there, new here!

Hi, Chris, our posts crossed. The ark I'm looking at is the Dell Midi and doesn't have an onduline roof. I will have another look at plastic but I don't like what I've seen so far. And don't they get really hot in summer - if we get one, of course?

    Hi there, new here!

Thank you, Marigold, it just came as a bit of a shock to find out they were so short-lived. It hadn't come up on any of the websites I've looked at. I've more or less decided on Speckledy, Blue Belle, White Star and maybe a Cream Legbar from asupplier who a friend has used (not the breeder we...

    Hi there, new here!

Thank you, everyone, for the warm welcome and the copious advice. :D I'll have to do some serious thinking because I was considering having four pretty hybrids to start with, but don't like the sound of them dropping like flies after a couple of years. I suppose that's an...

    Hi there, new here!

Thank you, Foxy. :D So it would be OK to mix them? We aim to start with just 4 hens but I have heard how easily people get hooked so we'll probably end up with some of each.

    Hi there, new here!

Hi everyone. I live in North Yorkshire with my OH and two cats. We've been thinking of having a few hens in our walled garden for a while now and have now decided to press on, although there's no rush. I want to get it right so I'm doing plenty of research before we take the plunge. We went...
