    Fascinated Alpacas

A hot air balloon came over today, the funny thing was just how fascinated the Alpacas were by it, I presume it was the first time they had ever seen one, they followed it's progress until the pilot fired up the burner at which point I nearly got trampled in the stampede.

    Henley Show

I was wondering if anyone had been to previous shows and can say if it is any good?. It is on next week and seems to have a good range of poultry on show but you never can tell.

    Good conditions for red mite

The recent damp warm weather is obviously providing a good breeding ground for red mite, I know Rick reported having them the other day and plenty of people on the BHWT Facebook page are reporting them too, we found some today in the coop, not a huge surprise as one of the 7 ex batts had started...

The most popular chicken thread on the net?

I can't remember exactly how I stumbled onto this but I found myself on a popular US chicken forum looking at a thread on imported English Orpingtons, mainly photographs of the said birds, I looked down at the page count and was amazed to see it ran to 2180 pages with close to 22000 posts on it...

    First encounter

I assume that my ex batts had never encountered a cat before last Sunday so it was interesting to see their reaction, what I took away from it was that in the download they received as chicks domestic cats didn't show up as predators. Greta is a rescue cat we picked up in April, she had been...

    Humidity Variance in the UK

Have just set 36 eggs, bit late and a bit of a risk but I wanted a chance to establish some new flocks before next Spring and with so much to do this has been the first chance to start a hatch. Anyway I have a Brinsea mini and a Octagon 20, the octagon 20 has a humidity readout and it has been...

Internal Laying- Not For the Squeamish.

We unfortunately had to put one of our ex batts out of her misery this afternoon, we had initially thought she was simply suffering from egg binding and we could manage it in the same way as usual with a spot of vaseline and steaming but it soon became apparent that she was going downhill fast...

    Ugly Egg

We have had quite a few ridged and misshapen eggs in our time and there have been a number posted on here too but I have to say this is the ugliest egg any of my birds has ever layed.

It takes more than that to deter a chicken.

Saw this vid via the BHWT, it captures the attitude of chickens so well when food is on the line. https://www.facebook.com/hazinor/videos/10152411914154662/

    Chickens and Alpacas

The Alpacas arrived last Saturday and it coincided with worming the ex batts so up until yesterday I haven't been able to let them mingle, the two boys aren't yet yearlings and were just sheared a couple of weeks ago so are quite small, they were curious about the chickens but didn't like the...

    Wake up call

We are used to the sound of birds early in the morning, but this morning was a bit different, and a bit louder!. Went out to see what it was and this is what I found, yes it's a peacock.

    Dead Hedging

Have recently been securing and stock proofing our boundary at the top end and after doing some hazel hedge laying I stumbled across an article on dead hedging and decided to give it a go as I had a load of off cuts from shrubs and trees I had cut back after many years of them being allowed to...

A Cheap and easy way to make a run??

While deciding how to fence my perimeter and considering different options I have been trawling the net and during my browsing I came across these panels, a bit like the Heras building site panels but with a narrower gauge mesh, they are 2m high and 3.4m wide so you could knock up a fair sized...

    Electric Netting and Geese

Hello to all on the waterfowl forum, I am considering branching out from the chickens into keeping a few geese and had a question about perimeter security. I have read Tim's articles on fencing and unfortunately a stock proof fence with electric strands will not be possible at my new place...

    Batt in Business

Looking down the photo postings here it was March 20th last year that I gave up my lovely birds to move abroad which makes it just under a year without chickens and what a long year it has been. Just moved into our new house (3rd move in under a year :-)07 ) and the first priority was to get...

    Cats of Karsiyaka

I mentioned previously that the amount of community cats around here is amazing, you can't walk twenty foot without seeing one, the funniest thing is watching gangs of them running after some of the people who set up the feed stations for them on the corners. Anyway here are a few photos we have...
