All three bantams are now officially broody!
Despite all attempts they are being very persistent - all they want to do is sit one on top of the other in the nestbox - all day. When I try shutting them out, Flo gets very distressed and flies to sit on top of the hen house. Mabel and Phantom...
Can anyone recommend any good toys for bantams?
Mabel is really noisy to the point that the neighbours have started complaining! Distraction seems to be the key, and she enjoys pecking cauliflower, but just wondered if some toys might help? They're free range but there's not a lot to peck at in...
I noticed a couple of days ago that Flo is getting broody. She wants to spend all her time on the nest, is hot to touch and has started pulling out her feathers underneath her breast.
What's the best thing to do to help her get back to normal? Our two other banties also use the nest area to...
Am I the only person in the world to have chickens that have never laid an egg?
Mabel, Phantom and Flo (pekin bantams) will be a year old in April. They seem extremely happy, and healthy - bright red combs, no sign of mites. They free range in our garden during the day, have layers pellets with...
Hello All,
Hope you and your chooks are all well.
We let our 3 bantams free-range in our small town garden. Unfortunately the grass, which was never particularly good, is now more bare earth than grass. I don't think this is all down to the chickens though because but rather more to do with a...
We finally decided enough was enough and treated the girls to a new house! Absolutely delighted with it. They are so happy in their new home. :D
The timber's 3 times the thickness of the old one, which is now down the tip!!
If anyone's looking for a hen house, I would thoroughly recommend...
Which is best for bantams - layers pellets or mash?
I read somewhere that pellets are a bit big for bantie beaks. Don't know if that's nonsense or not but they never seem to scoff the pellets down like they hoover up corn.
Hope everyone's staying warm out there... :P
This message links to my previous post about my leaky arc, but I thought I should start a new thread rather than continue high-jacking Stu's post (sorry Stu!).
This is a link to the arc we currently have: http://www.petsuperstoredirect.co.uk/poultry-ark-rs703-825-p.asp (I should stress...
I've bought some apple cider vinegar, as recommended, but just wanted to check the quantities I should be using. I know you suggested 2% but my maths isn't very good - how much would this equate to in a normal size water hopper. I don't usually fill it right up as I change it every couple of...
Is it OK to feed chickens fat balls as a treat in this cold weather? I've made some from the fat left over from making roast potatoes, and added some corn, and my girls seem to absolutely love it.
Here's a couple of piccies of my girls (Mabel - cuckoo; Phantom - silver; Flo - partridge).
They were supposed to all be 16 weeks when we got them in August, but Flo seems to be more developed than the others. Mabel's the friendliest but everyone says she looks prehistoric, bless her! Do you...
My next pressing question is - should I clip my bantams' wings?
It's only really a problem with our partridge bantam, Flo. She's naturally more nervy than the others, and is liable to take off when she panics. She doesn't usually go very high but I worry that she might disappear over the fence...
Hello all. Only discovered this forum yesterday and am new to keeping bantams, so got lots of questions I'm begging to ask! I've read a few books but found not all of them that helpful.
OK, first question:
1. How do you get bantams to eat their greens? My three are on a diet of layer's...
My vet advised me to give a dosage of 1/4 scoop (scoop provided in the packet) of Flubenvet per 500g of food. He suggested I work out how much feed they eat over a 7 day period and premix the wormer with that. I worked it out that my 3 bantams consume about 1kg over 7 days (therefore 1/2 scoop...
Hello Everyone,
I'm new to chicken keeping so hoping to pick up lots of advise and tips here! My three girls are Mabel (cuckoo), Phantom (silver partridge), and Flo (partridge) - all Pekin Banties, and no sign of eggs yet, bless them!
