Any recommendations for keeping track of or banding chicks?

I've seen a lot of people use colored zip ties for chicks. That seems to work reasonably well and isn't terribly expensive. You will have to change them often as they grow. Wing bands can also work but again you have to keep an eye on them as they grow and their feathers come in.

Does anyone else have direct experience in dealing with raccoons? They're so crafty - it's a real challenge

    Cheery Pics

Yeah, I do but maybe I need to be more consistent. I just have a small shallow pan they can drink out of. I'll get something a little bigger and make sure it's always full. You're not the first person to say fresh water is key

    Cheery Pics

Ok I need some tips for my wild bird feeders. I have a seed tray, a tube feeder, a water pan, a hummingbird feeder, and a suet cage feeder. I rarely see birds come by - like only when I put the unroasted peanuts out in the tray. Maybe I should start a whole new thread?

    Trader Joe’s selling fertile eggs?!?

I guess there's a bit of buzz going around because you could technically incubate and hatch these guys. I dunno that you'd want to necessarily and there's no guarantee they're fertile, they're usually just "in contact" with a rooster at some point. They're refrigerated as soon as they're laid so...

Sad day we lost two hens

Thanks Igor. We really don't have too many issues with predators but every once in a while they do come around. I would say once a year or less. There are rats outside but they don't seem to ever bother the hens. We did have a hawk get a chick once that was very unfortunate. But really the...

What do you think YOUR *real* cost of a dozen eggs is?

I'm thinking I'm coming in somewhere in the middle here. Maybe $8-9 per dozen. My hens are a little older now though so they don't lay quite as frequently as they used to. I'm thinking with the cost of bedding and food for chicks you have kind of a steep initial cost to overcome. With that...

    Watch Dates on Poultry Feed!

Our local pet food shop stopped carrying chicken feed and the last bag i got was definitely spoiled. I don't blame them. It's a hard game but these days I have to travel a bit further to the locally owned feed shop. They always have the best stuff from local mills.
