    Newby

Welcome, Clucking Grandpa. I got my first French Marans in September. She's just started squatting, so hopefully I'll be getting some lovely dark brown eggs in the nex couple of months. When you hear old-timers on the formum talk about dark brown eggs by the way, don't be surprised if you...

    The thoughts of our chickens...

A conversation that I might have overheard between my young PoL pullets yesterday... Tigger (the cream legbar hybrid): "I don't know what Mum put into our layers' pellets yesterday, but I don't half feel constipated today. I feel really weird." Eleanor (the partridge leghorn): "Well the rest...

    rats

Yesterday I found a rat half in & half out of a bait box, deceased. That's one way of it warning its family off eating the poison...

    rats

I was picturing you eating air fried rats for a moment. Then I twigged that it must be the squirrels that you eat! I guess you use the fur too? I've had a squirrel snuggle up under my fleece before, and its fur was very soft... I don't mind squirrels in our garden. But the moment they get into...

    Cheery Pics

Ohhh.... I'm jealous. I've never seen any of those in real life apart from one red squirrel. Why would anyone go on a sun & sangria holiday when they could have a trip like yours???

Introducing my new flock to a Grandpa's treadle feeder

That's not a bad idea... I've already put silicone tubing onto the training bolts, to make the closing quieter... I think I'll try the draught excluder next.

    Starting to squat

Hi JNAlderwood, & welcome to the forum. Out of interest, can I put lights into the coop when the girls' feeder & drinker are left outside? I guess I could get some battery powered rechargeable lights to stick in their coop? (It's a Green Frog chicken lodge.) How many extra hours of light do...

Congratulations BYM. I gather that they're hard to spot these days... We missed you!!

    Starting to squat

I guess that their objection to their new Grandpa's feeder has put paid to any hope of their coming into lay, more's the pity. They've been on hunger strike this week & I suspect that they're eating more bedding than layers' pellets...

    Archery

Hi Chris. It's good to hear from you after all this time. Rick posted a few days ago for the first time in ages too... My only experience of archery was at a hotel a few years ago, where it was one of the activities on offer. I came second in a beginners' competition & won a half bottle of rum...

    Starting to squat

Four of my nearly new pullets are now growing wattles & their combs are less tiny. The Speckledy hybrid (Sweep) surprised herself this morning by squatting when I reached out a hand to stroke her. I could almost see a thought bubble above her along the lines of "what the heck just happened to...

How come squirrels don't suffer from that? 🤔

My new cream legbar and speckledy hybrids

Josh has definitely made it easier to post photos. I could've sworn that I'd posted photos of my partridge leghorn, Pita Pinta Asturiana & French black copper Marans too though...

Introducing my new flock to a Grandpa's treadle feeder

None of the girls are laying at the moment- the ex-batts are too old & the new ones aren't old enough! So no risk of curried eggs... I wondered whether they'd be affected by "afterburn" 😵‍💫

Glad you're keeping on top of things. I think that reacting swiftly, before they get too numerous, always helps.

Did you get more leghorns, Hen-Gen? They're great for eggs, if not for hugs!

My new cream legbar and speckledy hybrids

A couple of photos of firstly "Tigger the Digger", my cream legbar hybrid who enjoys nothing more than digging through the bedding in the coop and chucking it out through the pop-hole, and "Sweep", my Speckledy, who I got for her cuddle potential, as I'm not likely to get many from a cream...

My new partridge leghorn p-o-l pullet

OK, so here's Eleanor, my partridge leghorn. and here's a close-up of her beautiful plumage She was sold to me as a hybrid, whereas my previous white leghorns were pure-breeds. What makes Eleanor a hybrid rather than a pure-breed? Any ideas please?
