    Elderly Stock

Best not! Could you just try one hatch now Hen-Gen, just to buy you more time?

I thought Hugh was a chef

Should imagine that all you keen bird people have seen this already but Hugh's Wild West (iPlayer), especially the dippers, owls and the roosting long tailed tits - Brilliant!

    OMG not happy BLOODY RATS

Following your problems Dye I finally got the camera back in the run, mostly to see who was going into the nest boxes in the day but left it pointed at the floor last night and it seems my mouse population is bigger than I thought. That is a 6 inch dog bowl in the picture so they are rather fat...

    Eggs please!

Feels like we have been eggless forever. The CLBs are well due to start laying as soon as the days start to get noticeable longer. They think it is great fun to kick all the nice comfortable nesting material out of the nest boxes at the moment and I keep putting it back and telling them that...

    hens loosing feathers

That looks just like a problem I had before - discussed in this thread http://poultrykeeperforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=9895&hilit=vent+gleet Never really understood what caused it but it went away finally and didn't come back. It wasn't 'vent gleet' - that was just a guess , there was some...

    Happy Xmas everyone

That's it. Week over. I'm on the train home. I can think about Xmas now! (bit late to go shopping but I can try.) Apart from the obvious, looking forward to having some extended time with the crew (chicken crew) that isn't just half an hour in the morning for a change. Shortest day behind us -...

    Storm Caroline

Yes, bingo. Thanks Hen-Gen (our local ones have white tails but all the rest is the same)

    Comb development

Wondering if anyone had seen this happen before? Two of my CLBs (now 24 weeks) have developed full comb and wattles (well fairly full.) One hasn't and still has her baby comb from about 16 weeks and just the beginnings of wattles. She seems lively etc.

    chicktec egg wash

This is the label from a bag of Smallholder layers pellets. If you can find a local stockist it is a bit cheaper than from BHWT https://shop.bhwt.org.uk/collections/feed-nutrition/products/natural-free-range-layers-pellets but the postage is free. It's good stuff I think. In my foolishness I...

    Impaction

Does anyone have any suggestions for saving my blacktail Aerial from an impacted gut situation? She was acting oddly last night, going and standing in the corner of the run in the dark after initially being on the roost. I've brought her in, crop was full and watery last night and this morning...

    Underweight chicken

I wondered if you all had any thoughts on this problem that I've been having with Bonnie the Orpington: At the end of June Bonnie was 3.4kg. I can't remember exactly when it started but it was some time after we returned from holiday in August that she started leaving rather wet dropping on...

    Unwelcome visitor

There was a commotion this morning with the girls and Linden throwing themselves at the sides of the run. None hurt but a large animal was moving behind the neighbours fence. They are familiar with the local cats so I can only think it was a fox. I've closed the pop hole to the un-secure...

    Bathtime and high fashion

Bit silly maybe but as promised. You will need to scale the print so the 10cm scale on the drawing is 10cm on paper

    Bathtime and high fashion

Took some photos today as the CLBs and Bonnie were in the bath together. Linden is sporting the the latest in footwear from the Autumn catalogue (actually an attempt to stop the girls from pecking his pin feathers - seems to be working and comfortable.) Bonnie has just got out of the bath...

    red mite

I may have jumped to the wrong conclusion earlier (my apologies if I have) as, being a bit 'old school' garden lime means to me builders hydrated lime. This is a bag of hydrated lime (commonly used by builders but also as a PH adjuster on soil that is too acidic This is strongly alkaline and...

Ice-free additive for birdbaths and drinkers

Last winter I had a black heat lamp pointing at one of the drinkers when it was below freezing and although it worked fine (never froze) it requires power to the run and was wasteful of energy as only a bit of the 100W was being delivered to the water. But where we are its only the odd few days...

    Anti-mite perches

I couldn't think of a way to compact it in height to 2 x 3 inch Marigold, at least not easily. Painting diatom slurry in the sockets before sliding the perch in is probably the best option unless you have enough head height for the hens too raise the perch on the posts (obviously so the...

    Anti-mite perches

I know I have been a little OCD about this but just wanted to share this anti red mite solution (one of many possible) as it really does seem to have stopped them in their tracks. The bottle caps have some diatom in.

    Growers feed with coccidiostst

I'm intending to wean these 12 week old pullets off medicated growers pellets and onto unmedicated growers over the next 2 weeks. It seems unlikely in the autumn here with the temperature falling that any sporulated oocysts will be around in to cause a problem before they become immune anyway...
