    Weather

It was really foggy here this morning. Rosie, our neighbour, said that it was 'radiation mist' which sounded pretty alarming but I think she meant that the sun was evaporating all the rain last night. I've finally got the liner stuck down in the green roof box and fitted the down spout flange...

    Houses

Its Leamington Spa Hen-Gen. Good to see you all! Did see your circular pond and stepping stones in previous pictures Marigold - like a lot - kind of Zen :) Sorry, just realised how small this picture is.

    Houses

Awesome Hen-Gen! Lets just say you have a bit more elbow room than us. But the river Leam corridor at the top through the town is nice to have. And handy for the train to just about anywhere.

    Recipes

Ive just started a batch of Staffordshire Oatcakes (to use up some surplus flour that has been around too long). Usually make 40-50 of them in a go and freeze them. Have a funny feeling I might have posted this in a previous thread, but here goes: 500g Wholemeal flour 500g Plain porridge oats...

    Man vs. Mouse

If they keep this up I,ll open the back door one morning to find that the whole run, chickens and all, has disappeared down a big hole! :)

    Man vs. Mouse

The mice are now climbing the mesh and going under the smooth DPC to find large enough holes in the hex mesh at the very top where I ran out of 1/2 inch weld mesh. Its good to know that the DPC stops them climbing over but will have to finish the weld mesh right to the top.

    Man vs. Mouse

The base of the dustbath is a concrete slab which was the old garden footpath from somewhere around the 50's I think. Its 8 inches below the existing ground level in the garden which I find interesting - how soil just accumulates over the years! And this is a good idea because...?

And here is the after. It should be going off firm before nightfall And with the rim on (if it posts...)

    Man vs. Mouse

Thats a good idea Chris. If I had a light sensitive door mechanism it would defiantly do the trick. I do have a 1 RPM motor (would drive a large model carousel) but, unfortunately, you cant be sure which way it will start turning when its turned on. Attaching images seems to be working a bit...

    Sexing eggs before incubation

This was in the BHWT newsletter. I had heard it might be possible but its actually looking like making it to a commercial process. Its not that I have a problem at all with breeders and keepers having to cull surplus cockerels but in the industry literally billions of males are hatched just to...

    Man vs. Mouse

Your move mice! It was getting dark and the image is a bit blurred. They can still get in - ran out of time - but I think I know all of the places now. Presuming they wont climb over the DPC at the first rail height. They haven't seemed to been able to cross it elsewhere so far. Lily the cat...

    Man vs. Mouse

No, unfortunately, these devices are not working for me. Over a hundred triggers like this last night (10 second videos). I didn't want to change anything else up till now to see if the devices would keep them away but its back to fencing etc now. Interestingly, green light (glowing on the...

    Man vs. Mouse

Agh! Yeh! Haven't had problems of chewing through wire and pipes. Maybe if I do succeed in keeping them out of the run they will get a bit more desperate for something to chew. They are defiantly using the rear corner in this shot. Maybe I can hypnotize Bonnie into thinking she is an owl. She...

    Man vs. Mouse

Maybe they do the thing of having holes in their pockets and distributing it evenly round the garden :) It is officially now known as the sh#t shaker - and here it is Just tall mesh basket. I thought the drill (with an allen key as an eccentric weight) would speed it up but the quickest way is...

    Man vs. Mouse

Here it is! I have covered the sides of the nest boxes with some hessian cloth for the moment - needs something better fitted but wanted to make the sides removable. There was extra space between the nests when separated by the length of the perch so I made the Auboise hopper fill the gap...

    Man vs. Mouse

Just had a very full on day building new nest boxes and perch which involved the materials from the existing provisions so it was a race against roosting time. The local mouse population has exploded this year (so has the sparrow pop.) Its not all my doing – our neighbor puts out a lot of food...

    Wet droppings (grey green)

Well her (still rather wet) droppings are brown again rather than grey/green so thats a step in the right direction! Ive ordered some oregano prep but meanwhile they are off the flubenvet and have had avipro on their breakfast mash. They were all heavier in May, well except Mo and Linden (who...
