    Meeting the Queen.

So, who is going to sit glued to the telly all day, with sandwiches and thermos, like my family did in 1953 crowded round the first-ever TV in our neighbour’s house? I remember wondering why it was snowing in London, indoors and out, when it was only raining in Salisbury!

But this made me laugh! Especially the clip about stealing the flowers! https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/sep/15/out-of-respect-the-worst-examples-of-public-mourning-for-the-queen

And one of the many downsides - A friend of ours has throat cancer. After a long wait, he was glad to get a date for his operation. The bad news is, it was next Monday. Now cancelled. No new date provided yet.

Or even 3 weeks would have done it! The one we had was very nice, to add to the other three items of royal memorabilia we have - the other two being a hideous mug commemorating the Queen’s silver jubilee and a lovely Doulton beaker commemorating Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897.

    Meeting the Queen.

I wonder how many of us actually met the Queen, or at least saw her at some event? In 1957, I was a Girl Guide at the World Camp held in Windsor Great Park to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of Scouts and Guides by Baden-Powell. There were lots of camps in the park, and each one had...

We shall have to adapt the height on the diverters fitted to the downpipes, as the new bigger butts will be taller. The usual sort of diverter simply acts as a weir to send the rainwater across into the butt until it fills, and then diverts the excess back down to the drain. However, a lot of...

That’s 40.5C! And you’re doing all this for us from California! That would account for the fact that the time on your posts comes up as what would be the middle of the night here. We truly are an international forum now. I have a friend who lives in Oregon, with similar weather problems...

All ad-free for me today, Josh, thank you - but as we all paid our subs at more or less the same time at the end of last year, I’m happy to renew now, to cover your start-up costs. The link to the donations page is coming up as 30 dollars - what contribution would you like in ££? Maybe make the...

Same here. I’m in the middle of a massive project to increase the volume of rainwater we can save in the winter, to top up our pond in summer. We already have 500 litres of storage, 300 litres of which can be diverted straight into the pond by hoses attached to the butts, but I’m organising more...

Things they should've taught us at school...

I went to a Girls Grammar School in the 1950s. New entrants were divided on the day they arrived into 3 streams, imaginatively named A, B and C, based solely on how many marks they got in the 11+ exam, and were stuck there for evermore irrespective of subsequent potential and progress. The A and...

On the old site, regular members paid an annual subscription to cover hosting costs, and in return saw the site without any ads. As I said before, please don’t be shy about asking us for contributions, Josh, if this could be restored. There are a lot of ads coming up for me today and it makes a...

Things they should've taught us at school...

I guess this is the answer, Icemaiden! I remember being taught the correct way to iron socks and handkerchiefs, also how to scrub a white wood kitchen table. That seemed pretty useless even then.
