    nature notes

As opposed to part of my copse. Alder and unidentified bush in leaf. Willows and Rosa rugosa still in winter mode! ☹️

    Pregnancy

Please, just twins. Looking to me like some silliness again this year. Could be phoning my mate. “Have you got any ewes that have lost their lamb cos I’ve got some adoptees available”.

    Whale

For a week now this Sperm Whale has been trapped in a voe. It doesn’t seem able to find its way back out to the open sea. Any ideas how to make a 50 ton whale go where you want it to?

    Eggs

Always been a bit sniffy about Leghorns. Thought they were flighty, laid mediocre eggs and couldn’t be tamed. A couple of years ago I bought six Buff Leghorn eggs from eBay. These have turned out to be calm, lay enormous white eggs and confiding. I’m a convert. Not this year but maybe in a year...

    Eggs

It’s that time of year again when the delights of eBay allow you to buy hatching eggs for pullets to sell in September. So this year it’s Welsummers, Mottled Orpington’s and Barred Rocks. Tempted by so many breeds but you have to draw a line somewhere.

    But is it Art?

This hangs over the fireplace in my house. It’s a constant reminder to me of the need to keep my worst side at bay. How about you? What picture have you got that speaks to you?

    Back to Basics

A lifetime of breeding livestock. But even so chickens have been the best ?.

    Back to Basics

Well there we are. My breeding flock for 2022 and a couple of Buff Leghorns hatched from eBay eggs. In April I need to buy some Welsummer eggs to hatch and rear for a neighbour and some Barred Rock eggs to provide a cockerel for myself. And in 2023, well maybe some Houdan eggs! ?.

    Tupping

So it all begins again next week. Those lambs are those some of you saw in the Shetland Times 20 months ago. The ewe was super milky and raised her triplets daughters to be fine sheep. That’s him, the Whitefaced Woodland ram, arriving here from Edale about 4-5 weeks ago. He was tired and angry!

    Whales

As if porpoises and killer whales aren’t enough now it’s humpback whales. How’s a man supposed to get a decent nights sleep with all this splashing about !?

    Geese

We have a large and ever increasing population of Grey Lag Geese overwinter here. We also periodically have Goose Pie nights, the next one being December 20th. So I was pleased to hear the sound of a shot gun being fired this morning. Should be a good night! ?

    Schnollies

For those unfamiliar with the breeds that’s my Merle sheepdog on the bottom right, a Standard Schnauzer top right and a Schnollie on the left.

    Schnollies

I guess about sheepdog size. I like them because they look like working Bearded Collies. Unlike the ridiculous show dog pictured below.

    Schnollies

A Schnollie Gone quiet so here’s a talking point. If my blue Merle working collie had ever had a season in her life I was going to mate her to a Standard Schnauzer to produce Schnollie puppies. But it wasn’t to be. I like the look of them. What say you?

    Failure

I like to think my only skill is breeding/raising different things. Canaries, weimeraners, gloxinias, chickens and sheep over my lifetime. So why a total failure at Tortoiseshell Abyssinian guinea pigs (cavies). Couldn’t get anything I’d want to put my name to. Anyone else had a total failure...
