Sounds like a solid plan. I can't wait to see how it comes together. That might be a bit tight for 10 hens but if you start with 3 you can add a few more until it feels right. You do not need a rooster/cockerel for your hens to lay. I would avoid one unless you intend on breeding your birds...

yknow now that I think about it I've only ever candled tortoise eggs! they're much smaller and thinner. 🐢

welcome to the forum @ChirpTJ ! thanks for joining. when my hens do this I just gently take them out of the lay box and place them on the ground. they don't like it but I don't want them brooding for too long. If they don't cooperate after a few days then I will set a timer and go out there...

I can't imagine having a rooster. Maybe if we had a much bigger property. Incubating and hatching babies would be so fun - especially for the kids. But I guess we could do that without getting a rooster/cockerel ;P
