    suncream

We had too many cockerels and some of our poor hens were over 'used' which means they now have bald backs. The cockerels are now in the freezer or have been invited to dinner already. I am worried that our ladies may get sunburnt - is this a possibility? We live in Crete and the temperatures...

would a turkey incubate and hatch hen/duck eggs?

We have a lovely lady turkey, Piggle, who is now laying eggs. She seems to want to sit for a while and may be going broody, which would be great had we a male. If we replaced her eggs with hen and ducks eggs (which we know stand a good chance of being fertilised) would she treat them as her...

    aggressive geese

We have four geese but are not sure if they are male or female and don't know if this makes any difference to their behaviour. We have two that are going round together and 'see off' all the other poultry (we suspect that one is male and the other female) - we have geese, chickens, ducks and...

biting the hand that feeds you

We have about 6 cockerels and 25 hens. They have all grown up together from chicks of 2 weeks old and are now 8 months old. The cockerels do squabble between themselves but this morning two of them took turn in jumping up against me quite aggressively. It is very intimidating. Why are they...

sexing geese by their tail feathers

We have noticed a lot of difference in the tail feathers of our geese. One has a pointed tail as all the feathers meet together whereas the other has its tail feathers spread out like a fan. I assume then that one is a goose and the other a gander - does anyone know which is which please? :?

    much smaller hen

We have a little chicken who, despite being the same age as all the other is significantly smaller than the rest and does not seem to be growing any bigger. She was lame but has battle on and is now fit, but still less than half the size of the other hens. The bigger chickens pick on her...

    spindly legged turkeys

they seem to be getting stronger except for Iggle who I now think must have broken her leg some time ago and it has set wrong ... still using the powder for a couple more days (you give it for 10 days). We have given her cheese and the seeds from fruits and veg that we have. Keeping hopeful...

    spindly legged turkeys

We have been giving them lentils as well. We asked at the local agricultural shop (the man there does speak English) and he told us to go to the vet and get some special powder to put in the drinking water that will help (not sure what is in it but it is bright yellow!). I have mixed some of...

    duck bullying geese

Our male ducks are bullying the geese, the geese are at least twice the size of the ducks. They both gang up on a goose (or it could be a gander we don't know) and chase it around then try to grab its neck and pull its feathers out in the process. There are two geese now with necks that...

    spindly legged turkeys

Thanks Tim. I did given them hardboiled eggs yesterday ... of course if the hens would hurry up and start laying eggs they could have lots of them!!! Anyway, thanks again and I will try to get more protein into them as you suggest. :)

    spindly legged turkeys

yes it is the same problem with all our poultry - we are in Crete and the options are pretty much either corn or wheat ... and we get leftovers like water melons, and kitchen scraps. They have access to corn and wheat and scraps as well as the stuff that grows in the garden - grass, weeds etc.

    spindly legged turkeys

We have four turkeys. One has a very wonly leg which we are keeping an eye on. The others have very spindly legs and seem to 'tread carefully', the male being the strongest. Is this normal? Can we do anything to strengthen their legs?

    injured turkey

One of our turkeys has an injured leg. We think she may have fallen badly from a perch and twisted her knee as that is where she is limping from (though it is hard to tell). She has been like this for about a week. Her legs look almost crossed as she sometimes stands on her other foot to...

    introducing new gosilings

We live in Crete and have 40 chickens, 6 ducks, 4 geese (all 4 months + old) and 4 turkeys (3 months old). They all live happily together in our garden. We are thinking of buying some 2 week old goslings. Will it be okay to put them straight in with the others or will we have to keep them...

will our ducks and geese eat the hens eggs

When our hens lay eggs and lay in the grounds rather than the nesting boxes we will have to hunt for the eggs. Someone said to put some eggs into the nesting boxes so they can see them and that might help, is this a good idea? Also, will our ducks, geese and turkeys break the shells and eat...

    growth rate of a turkey

We have 4 white turkeys, one male and 3 females (we think). We had them at about 2 weeks old and although they have grown a little they still seem very small - our chickens are bigger than them. Is this normal? They are eating and drinking and seem healthy and happy. They are now 3 months old.

geese - gender and egg laying

We have 4 geese and are unsure as to whether they are male or female. we think there are 3 males and 1 female. At what age do they start to lay eggs? Ours are 4 months old, is this too early to expect eggs?

    ducks laying eggs

Our ducks are now 21 weeks old and are happy and healthy. We thought that they would be laying eggs by now, but none have started. Should they be laying at this age or are we a bit premature in expecting them? If they should be laying by now is there anything we can do to encourage them, or...
