chicken with a pasty butt !

take a warm, damp towel and gently rub the area around the chick's vent to soften the poop. Be cautious when pulling it off to avoid damaging the skin. It's essential not to rush the process, as it might take a bit of time. You might also want to apply a little olive oil to the area to help...

chicken with a pasty butt !

Thank you for joining! Pasty butt, or "chick pasting up," is indeed a common issue among young chicks, especially in the first few days of life. It occurs when their droppings stick to the vent area, making it difficult for them to excrete waste properly. This condition is typically caused by...

    Coop, run and enclosure build

I agree I've always felt skeptical of people selling plans. That feels like a pre-boomer type of thing. Buying hovercraft plans from popular science monthly

    Coop, run and enclosure build

Sounds like a solid plan. I can't wait to see how it comes together. That might be a bit tight for 10 hens but if you start with 3 you can add a few more until it feels right. You do not need a rooster/cockerel for your hens to lay. I would avoid one unless you intend on breeding your birds...

Help my hen is brooding i think!

welcome to the forum @ChirpTJ ! thanks for joining. when my hens do this I just gently take them out of the lay box and place them on the ground. they don't like it but I don't want them brooding for too long. If they don't cooperate after a few days then I will set a timer and go out there...

How much do you think I could sell 12 duck eggs for?

hey that's not so bad. I dunno why I thought they'd be a bit more! i'm going to have to look next time I'm at Trader Joe's. I don't think our weekly market has duck eggs. I also want to check out the farmer's market. I know they have fresh eggs every week but I haven't been watching prices

Does adding a rooster to your flock encourage more egg laying?

I can't imagine having a rooster. Maybe if we had a much bigger property. Incubating and hatching babies would be so fun - especially for the kids. But I guess we could do that without getting a rooster/cockerel ;P
